Working has become an essential part of urban human lifestyle. The young workforce of any country consumes and contributes the most amount of resources. People are struggling to manage the work-life balance as the population is getting bigger and opportunities are shrinking. Apart from that, social media has set high levels of living amongst the young workforce. However there is one big problem that fairly still subsists in almost every sector: ageism.

Discriminination in hiring employees based on age has become an upcoming phenomenon as the industries demand young employees only. This poses an unending hindrance for those who have crossed the age of 35 years to get employment. This practice has become even more prevalent with the privatisation of sectors and globalisation in MNCs.

Further, it is a well known fact that women have to bear the brunt of sexism and discrimation at the workplace. Women after the age of 40 years are more likely to face gender inequality in getting employment opportunities than men. Clear reasons being the time gap owing to marriage and children. It is not only unfair but also irrational to be inconsiderate of the society we live in.

Women are burdened with domestic responsibilities and household chores without due consideration about their career. Hence, they are bound to leave their jobs and take care of the family resulting in a lack of career prospects after 40.

Getting started with the 2nd innings!

It’s better late than never! Dreams are not defined by age. Age is indeed just a number. After a long break, it is difficult for women to find work in their preferred sector. They face lack of confidence, faith and self esteem even while kick starting the second halves of their career. The fear of being a part of the workforce and inability to fit in is even bigger.

It is the sad reality of our society that work done by women at home is not accounted as “work”. Unpaid domestic labor done by women for half of their lives is always neglected and looked down upon.

But there are career opportunities for women out there even after the age of 40 if they are determined to work. You can always give your life a fresh turn. All you have to do is overcome your fears and dream again. There are thousands of women out there who had to derail their career path to serve their families but 40 is indeed a good number to start your 2nd innings with new energy, new goals and a new mindset.

Following are a few career paths that you can opt to transform yourself from a housewife to a working woman:

Teaching

Becoming a teacher is not easy. You are responsible for the future of an entire class of children. It requires complete knowledge of the subject. Communication, listening and leadership skills are also a must. A teacher must have patience and politeness to understand students and explain their doubts. You can apply in private and government schools whichever suits you better. Additionally, the timings of schools are shorter as compared to other jobs. Considering that you have just been out of a home routine, such timings make perfect sense.

Freelancer

Being self-employed at the age of 40 is the best thing one could wish for. Now that we live in the social media age, the accessibility of resources and customers has drastically broadened. If you excel at one skill, then it will not be difficult for you to carve out a niche as a freelancer. Not everyone is well conformed with the 9 to 5 corporate culture, and hence freelancing can be your saviour. All you have to do is polish your skills, create networking and assign payment, you are all set! Marketing, content writing, stock trading, designing and many other opportunities are available to work as a freelancer.

Blogging

Blogging is increasingly becoming popular amongst people who like to be their own bosses. Working and earning money doesn’t always mean that you have to step out of your house, you can always use the internet to create employment for yourself. You can take up blogging about personal issues, socio-political problems and even artistic ideas. This is a good opportunity for women who are fearful about entering the workspace again and being judged by other younger employees. Blogging even provides you peace of mind because your home is your office.

Translator/Interpreter

Age has no bar when you want to pursue a career being a translator or an interpreter. But it is, of course, necessary for you to know 2 or more than 2 languages. There are various applications which can help you learn more languages with precision. The job of a translator and interpreter is not necessarily outdoors, various translator jobs can be done while being at the comfort of your home. This way you can handle your domestic responsibilities and you won’t have to exhaust yourself physically and mentally.

Hair Stylist

Women often have to sacrifice their dreams because of household responsibilities but who said you can’t start again? Becoming a hairstylist doesn’t require a minimum or maximum age. If you know the skill professionally then you are good to go. Even if you’re not professionally trained but wish to pursue a career in hairstyling and makeup, there are various types of courses available according to the requirements. You don’t need a degree but you do need a diploma which will help you to apply for a cosmetology license. Once you have the license, all you have got to do is build repertoire with customers and win their trust with your work.

Life Counsellor

Being 40 means if you have seen more life than the young workforce. Of Course the young minds will have fresh ideas and updated technological skills but they will not possess the experience as the older adults. According to the statistics, women are better life counsellors due to better emotional understanding and experience of hardships. The objective of the life counsellor is to guide their clients to follow the right track. Human beings can often get caught in the shackles of everyday struggles but life counselors help them to get out of it by listening and talking to them. Their past experiences are also a major plus in this job.

Social Worker

If caring about others and being useful to society interests you then social work is the field for you. Start anytime you want. Since we live in a society that has an unequal distribution of resources and opportunities, a major chunk of this structure is often left struggling: the weaker section of the society. When you get involved in social work, you can help low income families and downtrodden classes with financial, medical and emotional aid. However, being a social worker is not easy, you have to be empathetic and others first always. Apply to government institutions and NGOs to start your career.

Online Tutor

Online tutoring is increasingly becoming a popular profession not just among people beyond 40 but also the younger generation. But you must be technically sound and professionally skilled with the subject. Teaching online will also not physically drain women because most women go through menopause and other physical restraints during this period. You can even teach unconventional courses like Yoga, Cooking, Dining etiquettes, Painting, Dance forms and more. Teaching from home with the help of the internet lets students from different parts of the world learn new skills.

Artist

You can leave art but art never leaves you. It is hidden somewhere inside, but when it comes to the surface again, a little practice can change your stars in the universe. With simply using a laptop or a computer, you can start creating digital art and become an illustrator. However, if you are not tech savvy, then you can always try your hands at handmade craft products. Social media has created a space for small businesses where you can sell and market your products. So if you are interested in making art, then why wait to become an artist? Collect the material, jot down unique ideas and go for it.

Lunch delivery

Cooking is one skill that women excel quite well but it’s strange how most of the chefs in the world are men. Especially in India, women are taught to cook since adolescence because apparently a girl cannot be married if she doesn’t know how to cook. Anyway, keeping aside the conservative and orthodox norms, if you are good at cooking, you have the option of starting a food delivery business. Many people starve themselves due to lack of cooking skills. All you need is some professional cooking skills, marketing and networking tactics and initial investment and you start the business.

Professor

The most significant factor of being older is that you have experience and expertise in the skill. Being a Professor requires a Masters and Doctorate but you can apply for Assistant Professor in colleges and other educational institutions with a masters degree in a subject. Few years of experience is also required to become a Professor at a reputed college and get a fat salary. Submitting research papers and journals and publishing them thereafter can also help you to land up in a good educational institution. With a good salary, it also provides various facilities so you don’t have to worry about retirement.

Administrative and Public Assistant

Since lectureship requires high educational qualifications, it is better for women with high school diplomas to apply for administrative and public assistants. This kind of job requires management and communication skills. In administrative assistance, you are supposed to keep a log of data and files, exchange emails and manage information about the company profile; however, public assistance is allowed as per government guidelines. Along with financial aid, you can enjoy other associated facilities too.

Babysitting

Attending meetings is one thing but managing babies and taking care of them is far more difficult jon. One has to deal with little monsters in this job. Nevertheless if childminding is your cup of tea then you must go for it. Most parents of children are working professionals , hence they require trustworthy childminders for their children. They are usually ready to pay exorbitant amounts because it is a question for their children. Therefore, one can earn really well even after 40s and make a good career out of it since parents trust women with experience even more.

Therapist

Therapy is something that is largely becoming a part of everyone’s life. Since we live in an age where mental health disorders and traumas are quite common, almost everyone is in dire need of therapy. Every person consults a therapist at least once in their lifetime to discuss emotional concerns and get out of them. The problem is that the world is producing great talkers but poor listeners which is why people need therapists. Hence it is a great career opportunity for women above 40s with a degree in Psychology to restart their career. You can even try Occupational Therapy since it is a well paid job nowadays.

Hoping that this guide helps you to regain your confidence and live your life to your fullest once again because remember, there is life beyond 40. Try your hands on these career options and fulfill your long awaited dreams.

To all those who think that performance is all about billables, meeting deadlines and impressing the bosses by sycophancy are horses of a very small race. Corporate analysts believe that beyond the Individual performances of the employees, it is the symbiotic relationship of employees which makes them to put up a holistic effort to make the boat of the company sail in the stormy sea called the market.

Therefore, now the recruiters and the Human Resource does not mark the employee merely on the basis of tangible figures like the work hours, Power Point Presentations made and meetings lead, but also mark the workers on their ability to coordinate with their co-workers and their attitude towards the superior as well as inferior employees.

Useful resources related to program/project management:

Technical Program Management Blog by Mario Gerard
Try Exponent
HBR

So you as readers might be wondering as to what makes you coordinate better with your co- workers. Make sure that you mark our words, good coordination is an outcome of better communication. Communication is not rocket science but it is merely opening up to your fellow worker understanding him/her and making him/her understand the needs, priorities and ways of working and few other tits bits that are important to work in an office space together.

These Are The 5 Ways You Can Communicate Better With Your Co- Workers

Understand your co-workers Background – Corporate provides with an opportunity to every person competent for the job to do wonders to the entity and earn a fortune, it allows people from various financial and social upbringing without discrimination. Until and unless you do not delve into understanding the social facts that lead to your co-worker’s growth as a human being, you will never be able to understand his/her behaviour and reactions to your conversation with him/her. Understanding other person’s antecedents guides you to find a common subject to talk upon, makes you deft enough to explain yourself to the other person in a better manner.

Understanding Priorities – In office spaces you come across various co-workers, some are extremely learned, dedicates towards their job, aiming to get promoted, while others can be the epitome of unhealthy office politics, gossip mongers, sycophants etc. Until and unless you do not understand the priority of your co-worker, you cannot mark the boundaries of the conversation, the areas of discussion and decide the nature of dealing with your co-worker. Conversation which are wide in nature with wrong people might become the hottest gossip of the office tomorrow which will demotivate you to make even necessary communication with your colleagues. So make sure that you know that what is your co-worker is up to before opening your mouth.

Keeping things Professional – Usually it is advised that personal life should not be brought within the four walls of the office space, it is because here on, all communications that will take place will be led by principles of productivity, corporate governance and office issues, which prevents it from getting complex. Simple conversations about work life keeps the office discourse between employees very light and digestible.

Peace is important that winning the Argument – One instance of keeping your urge of winning the argument above peace and tranquillity that you share with your co-workers can tear you apart, and lead to permanent dents even in professional relationships, which will further lead to creating lobbies within to office workspace leading to balkanisation preventing team effort in true sense. Make sure that sometime letting things off is the best solution and fighting for the sake of winning an argument can lead to horrifying repercussions.

Hanging out – Go for a cup of coffee, or brunch, of grab a beer, having friendly colleagues makes you very comfortable in sharing your situation and issues and also understanding the same. Conversations outside the workspace gives you the opportunity to know your co-worker inside out. You explore and make your co-worker explore things that you both were never aware of, perhaps common interests on which you can work together, or perhaps some shortcomings that you can help your co-worker overcome. Healthy relationship with your co-workers irrespective of their gender is always a plus point and helps you not just to coordinate but also to lead the team if the assignment that you are handling demands so.

Objective Thinking – Wherever you come across a dispute between fellow co-workers, prefer not taking any side, turn down your temptation to take a side and rather try mediating between both the parties and win the trust of both the sides. This will not just get you the respect but also the appreciation of the Superiors and the HR for handling things with maturity. Rational thinking is fundamental in such scenarios.

Expert Tip – Not everyone likes wit, so make sure that you crack your jokes to people you really think will appreciate it coming and not those who will think it to be presumptuous

In a cohesive and inclusive environment, it becomes necessary to put forward your voice in the best way possible. You can be the smartest person in the room but if you do not communicate your feelings in the best manner, no one will believe the same. It hence becomes necessary to sound smart. In a group of people, you may feel that one person is smart, and that doesn’t come from how educated or well off they are but from how good they are at communicating something and the words and actions they use to put forward the things they have learnt. Additionally, there is also that one person in the group who may be the smartest, but because of his poor presentation skills, no one will ever find out about it.

What’s most important is that you don’t become the latter. You need a combination of both smartness and speaking skills in life.

Speaking plays a more important role in sounding better than writing, which is because of the paralinguistic cues that are attached to speaking.

In 2012, a study by Quantifies impressions to define how voices influence perception identified that almost 23% believe that they get more influenced by the voice quality of the speaker in comparison to the content of the message.

After the quality of voice, other factors that influence the listener are- Passion, Presence, Knowledge.

How To Start Sounding Smart?

Work On Your Posture

The way you present yourself has a lot to do with your posture. When you stand smart people are more inclined to listen to you.

Avoid Mindless Language

Use simple and sophisticated language that your listeners will understand. Using words that they do not understand will only make them lose their interest in you.

Speak Loudly Not Forcefully

Some people associate loud with putting force in your speech. Where the former catches attention, the latter only makes you sound rude and should be strictly avoided.

Pay Close Attention To Voice

Use voice in a way that will engage more users and make them interested in what you have to say.

Avoid Vocal Irritants

Vocal habits that are termed as ‘vocal fry’ should be avoided at all costs. These affect how your listener perceives you

Don’t Be Afraid Of Silence

When your listeners are silent, it may mean that they are interested in what you have to say. While silence, when you are asking a question, would mean they are not interested, it is a positive thing when they are silent during your speech.

Don’t Weigh In Unless You Have Something To Add

If you have basic knowledge of the topic, weighing into the discussion may make people feel you are stupid. It is essential to understand when to barge in and when to not say anything at all.

Majority of us don’t know how to use personality in the right way and sound smart. Hence, a small effort can go a long way. It is necessary to understand the things you are doing wrong. Start by being self aware and make sure to take inputs from people who are listening to you or are smarter than you, because learning is all about listening others.

A modern woman has more responsibilities to fulfil than the women of previous generations.

Apart from household responsibilities, a woman has to look forward to her work commitments as well. Amidst all this, what women often sacrifice is their healths.

Women are considered more prone to suffer from problems related to the lack of nourishment and nutrition. It is extremely important for all women to take care of their bodily and mental health.

Considering the tight schedules in this modern era, it becomes extremely tough to look after our diets. The women who have no time to even stop and think of something else other than their work and home, food is nowhere on their priority list. Also, modern women are more concerned about their figure and appearance and in order to stay thin, meals get hampered.

But don’t worry, here are some diet tips for working women that will help them in being healthy and nourished:

1. BREAKFAST

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. No matter how much late you get, never skip the breakfast. When you miss your breakfast, your cravings get triggered and that is when you start consuming high-calorie foods which are not good for your health.

Instead, have a full and heavy meal with the required amount of calories in the morning. Add some fresh and juicy fruits to your breakfast along with a glass of milk to keep you energetic throughout the day. You can have oatmeals, pancakes, waffles, toasts, eggs, or anything you like. Just ensure that whatever you eat should keep you full for enough time.

HOMEMADE LUNCH

Carry your lunch with you in your workplace. Do not eat at the nearby cafes, diners or restaurants. Outside food is extremely unhealthy.

Cooking your lunch might sound tiresome and you may feel it is boring, but you can always try different recipes and experiment something new out of your regular grocery.

Home cooked lunch is way more nutritious and healthy. And the bonus is that you’ll save a lot of bucks which you’ll otherwise spend on unhealthy food.

KEEP YOURSELF HYDRATED

Increase the water intake. Water is the most important element that contributes to keeping you healthy, active and beautiful. Irrespective of the fact that whether you are a homemaker or a working woman, keep yourself hydrated. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day. Carry your own water bottle at work if need be. You can also drink fresh fruit juices, they provide fiber and keeps you hydrated for a long time.

SAY NO TO PROCESSED FOODS

Processed food and drinks like cookies, chocolates, cakes, sugary snacks, fizzy drinks, etc. should be avoided at all costs. They affect your health at a great level without even you realizing it. Instead, try making such things at home with much more healthier substitutes.

Following these tips will surely make you feel healthier and look beautiful. You’ll feel fresher and active. Just add a workout of 45 minutes thrice a week and you’ll be able to maintain a good figure as well.

It can be hard to know how to react when a colleague is rude to you. In the expectation that the individual will stop, some people are tempted to let violent behaviour slip. Others find themselves battling back. When a coworker treats you badly, how do you change the dynamic? And if the conduct continues or gets worse, how do you know when you’re dealing with a real bully?

The best kind of professional fireworks can also arise from such random sets of colleagues: sparky, satisfying partnerships, meaningful friendships, and brief but fond acquaintances. But you will find yourself stuck with a non-team player every once in a while, a bully, a jerk, or someone who is just continuously belittling or condescending.

The very first step is to identify what’s causing the behaviour. Research from Nathanael Fast, an assistant professor at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, proves a popular idea: when their pride is challenged, people act out.

“We often see powerful people behave aggressively toward less powerful people when their competence is questioned,” he says. “People who are skilled and well-liked are the most frequent targets precisely because they pose a threat.” So, it can stimulate the ego of the abuser.

You don’t need to be rude in return:

The reflexive response to rudeness, even for the most wise among us, would be to retaliate with the same. Hatefulness can be just as infectious in its own way as the seasonal cold sweeping through your department, says Porath.

You may have the sharpest putdown ready to fire, but note that the office jerk will not be silenced by a withering takedown, only inflamed, and potentially escalated into open confrontation by their one-sided rudeness. Avoid their zingers, reduce your interactions, and be short, polite and firm when you have to deal with them.

Spend time with colleagues that make you happy:

“Everybody should have alliances at work — peers and people above and below, who can be your advocates and champions,” recommends Woodward. Communicate to such friends and see what they can do to support, whether it’s just confirming your stance or communicating on your behalf. Of course, you can consult your HR if the situation escalates. But before that, Woodward says, “you owe it to the relationship to try to solve it informally,”.

Make sure you have a cluster of energizers to balance them if there is a crippling de-energizer throughout your workplace. Who are the individuals who support you in your workplace? Who are all who, in the first place, represent why you took this job? Even if it’s for a fast coffee break or a stroll around the block, spend time with them. And don’t allow your de-energizer dealings to force you to cancel plans with family and friends.

Nurture a sense of flourishing on your own:

A sense of prospering will make things easier for you to reframe the put downs and disrespect of your coworker so that they may not sound as harmful. How far would you let someone drag you down? ‘Porath asks. “In large part, you really do get to decide how you interpret incivility, the meaning you assign to it, and the stories you tell yourself. You also get to control whether it makes you feel bad or not.”

In many ways, you can add up your sense of prosperity, including getting enough exercise and sleep, eating a diverse diet, and prioritising your interests and hobbies without work. Make positive changes at work, such as finding a mentor or doubling down on your personal objectives.

Talk and observe:

In certain situations, you can decide to talk it out with your obnoxious coworker, particularly if you can point to a specific experience or pattern of conduct. Before you do, Porath recommends you ask yourself these questions:

Is their conduct deliberate?

Is their actions special, or is it part of a culture of incivility in general?

Once you have arranged a meeting, choose a reasonable time to chat and pick an atmosphere where both of you can feel relaxed. One thing to consider: Does it help to have other people (e.g. your boss or someone from HR) as witnesses or mediators? Invite them if so. And you can find it helpful first, even role-play the conversation, to rehearse your phrasing, ideas and approach.

Try not to take it personally:

Keep calm and carry on, as they say. It’ll feel like this person is threatening you if you take things personally, and in turn, you’ll activate a fear response mechanism in your brain.

You tend to make less apparent and rational choices when that happens, and you resort to more emotional ones. Note, maybe this person is trying to annoy you. And if you let her, say, by lashing out to protect herself and telling her what a jerk she’s like, you’re just going to be playing in her hands right now. In a negative circumstance, be cool, optimistic, and never underestimate the potential of kindness.

“What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.”

Core values to consider

Do’s:

Know that most individuals at work behave aggressively because they feel challenged

Question yourself whether the situation is too emotional or misunderstood.

Call out the wrong actions at the time

Don’t’s:

Take all the blame: many bullies choose highly qualified and well-liked targets.

Escalate the situation before you have managed to settle it informally and with the support of your allies

If you think the scenario continues and you should leave. Leave.

You may not be able to alter others’ actions, but you should at least learn to cope with them effectively to mitigate the impact and suffering on you, your trust, and your job.
