People always need reasons to celebrate, weddings are definitely one amongst them. When it comes to weddings, the most amount of attention is always paid to the bride. What she is wearing, who is her stylist, what color will be the wedding dress, what the accessories will be, what the hairstyle will be; all of these questions pop in everybody’s head.

And hence, the bride is loaded with a number of suggestions concerning her big day. It really gets difficult to choose what would suit the bride gracefully. Not only is it important to follow the latest trends for weddings but it is also significant to identify what will suit YOU the best!

Worry no more! We bring to you the best romantic wedding hairstyles of this season which you can try and choose to make your day even more special. Some are the classic vintage ones which have been tried and tested innumerable times, while others are the hot shot of the town that can be experimented with.

HAIR ARRIVES THE BRIDE!

Elegance, flamboyance and grace are the words that describe the bride in the best way on her wedding day. Everything needs to be perfect from wedding dress to footwear to accessories to food to decoration to the groom as well. When the bride enters the room, she becomes the center of attention because of her elegance and beauty. However, the first focus goes to her hair and veil. Since we live in the world of latest trends and high end fashion, people have more and more access to opportunities and choices.

Not every hair type has the same texture, length and quality. Hair differs in various ways. Some women have wavy, some curly and some straight. Styling different kinds of hair types can be swoon worthy. But don’t worry, we have pooled in several hairstyles for brides with all kinds and lengths of hair.

Embellishments, headbands and flowers are the latest trends of 2021 to get the most romantic hairstyle for your wedding because it only ups the quotient beauty and glamour in your wedding ensemble. Let’s have a look at some of the best wedding hairstyles for brides based on their hair type categorically to make a statement on their wedding day.

LATEST TRENDS FOR BRIDE HAIRSTYLES in 2021

FOR LONG HAIR

It is both easy and difficult for a bride with long hair to find the right hairstyle for the wedding. Of course, having long hair opens a lot of options for the bride to try and experiment but it also loses many. Managing long hair with a tricky hairstyle can sometimes be a huge and messy task. However it will work just fine if you can strike the right balance with the below hairstyles:

Hair vines

Hair vines are all about enhancing the volume of hair so that they look symmetrical and elegant. One would want to show off the length of their hair on their wedding day because it requires a lot of effort to take care of long hair. Hence, vines can add a certain oomph to the styling of the hair.

Waves and curls

The most basic yet stylish wedding hairstyle is curling them. The wavy hair is in vogue as it sets a certain class for the bride. If you are fond of curls, you can even make high-up, tousled and ringlet curls, whichever goes with your wedding dress and veil. Soft and natural curls are mostly preferred by brides because they don’t seem superficial and keep the entire look subtle.

Dutch, fishtail and french braids

Wedding hairstyles are all about braids. Experimenting with different types of braids can really help you to determine which suits you the best. It also depends on the color and texture of the hair, which kind of bride will match perfectly with the face structure. Dutch, mermaid and french braids are the vintage hairstyle for brides; however, the fishtail braid has a lot of variants which look attractive.

Hair buns with wisps

Got all confused with the latest trends of bride hairstyles? Don’t worry, the good old hair bun with wisps will never go out of fashion. If you are someone who doesn’t like experimenting too much with the hair and wants to keep it simple, Hair updos with wisps are the best option for you. You can even team it up with some hair accessories.

Voluminous hair updos

The problem with long hair is that they often lose volume and density as they grow longer. Adding volume to the hair updo can work well to solve such problems. Take inspiration from Bridget Bardot to transform your thin long hair bun to a voluminous updo with little embellishments. Voluminous hairstyles are preferred by most brides during their wedding.

Bogus low buns

Time to go retro? The bogus low buns were originally started in the 60s and 70s when the actresses tied hair loosely below their neck in a bun to avoid headaches. Take inspiration from the celebrities of the 70s to create a bogus low bun with some wildflowers. Bradining the bun can also help to add an X factor while keeping it simple.

FOR MEDIUM HAIR

Medium length is the best length to have when it comes to making wedding hairstyles. It is because it does not create any mess or fuss. All one has to do is focus on the texture and color. The below guide of hairstyles can help the bride to identify the best from the lot. If you lack density, you can even get hair extensions to achieve the exact look of the hairstyle.

Textured updos

Braids and updos can really up your game at the wedding if combined together. The possibility of braiding the upper half of the hai and creating a low bogus updo for the leftover hair is higher in medium length hair. This creates a unique hair transformation which is harder to achieve for others. Hence, the hairstyle defines a bride’s individuality.

Hair crowns with braids

All you have got to do to create this gorgeous princess-like look is curl the hair loosely and make thin braids. Once it’s done, wrap it over your head like a crown. It truly is a queen statement without the real crown. The hair crowns also act as a perfect tandem hairstyle for the bridesmaids.

Asymmetrical low buns with veil

Look for the wedding hairstyle trends and one can find asymmetrical low buns everywhere. This kind of hair updo celebrates the mess and does not aim for perfection. It can be created with loose strands of bands surrounding the face. The advantage of trying this hairstyle is that with bangs, it will beautify the entire look with bands. Use some orchids on the bun to complete the look.

Boho locks

The bohemian look is here to stay for quite a long time. Since it is a combination of tradition and trend, almost every bride has an eye on boho braids and locks for their wedding look. Loose braids and light curls will go best with a classic wedding dress and nude makeup. Some golden and silver hair clips can be added to highlight the hairstyle.

Classic half up and half down

The classic half up and half down hair is the simplest hairstyle to create and carry. Since weddings are all about having fun, no bride would want to be entangled in her discomfort of wedding dress and complicated hairstyle. Adding a hair bow to divide the hair will make this simple wedding hairstyle glamorous.

Waterfall braids

Braids can be created in a waterfall manner if you want to go all out with the hairstyle. The cascading Grecian waterfall braids might be a little tricky to make but a professional stylist would get you the perfect look within a few minutes and then you can show it off to all the guests.

FOR SHORT HAIR

Now it might seem like brides with short hair will have a hard time finding the right wedding hairstyle, but after having a look at the following trendy hairstyles for short hair, your thoughts will change. Who said the bride has to have long luscious hair only? It’s time to break such stereotypes with these hairstyles:

Messy and classy chignons

Looking for the most comfortable hairstyle for the wedding? Try out messy chignons. They are not only elegant but they suit every hair length. For short hair, chignons bring back the fashion of bygone times and it’s surprising how a lot of brides are still drooling over how graceful they look. You can even create a neat chignon if you like it classy.

Twists with headbands

Since there is less scope of braids with short hair, it is best to make twists with loose curls or waves. Headbands with flowers and silver hair accessories can help in putting together a great look with the wedding dress. One can even tie the hair partially to avoid mess with entirely open hair.

The illusion of length

This is the newest trend that every bride wants to try for her wedding. Now for women who like short hair but want a hairstyle of long hair for their wedding look, this hairstyle is a miracle. Horizontal braids are created and strategically set with hairspray and hairpins to create an illusion of a hair updo created from long hair. This is a good chance for the bride to play with the wedding guests by making them wonder how it happened.

Formal Faux Hawk

Turning a mohawk into a faux hawk is what the brides of 2021 needed. Gone are the days when brides used to wear a traditional wedding gown with a classic hairdo and a veil. Faux hawk is a formal hairstyle for brides with shaved heads or sides on their wedding day. Team it up with hair pins, flowers and headbands to make the hairstyle look even better.

Monroe inspired curls

Will the Marlin Monroe hairstyle ever go out of fashion? The trends say: not in at least 100 years to come. The classic Monroe inspired curls is the most romantic yet sexy hairstyle that a bride can ask for. The large rollers will create teasing curls and the famous coif of Monroe. Adding some embellishments will do no harm to it.

Bouffant with flower tiara

On the wedding day, every bride wants to feel like a princess. The flower tiara on the head and a classic bouffant is the perfect wedding hairstyle for short hair which never goes out of trend.

Using dry shampoo can glorify and glamorize the wedding hairstyle even more by adding substantial volume. Infact, having some loose strands around the face can make it even more romantic and fabulous. Don’t forget to add minimal accessories like beads, pearls, tiaras, clips and headbands to add the extra bit to your whole look. Once you have your perfect wedding hairstyle, you are ready to slay on your wedding day!

Welcome to a Malay Wedding!

The idea of wedding planning in itself is overwhelming, and the expectations that come with it are even more stressful when traditional culture and values come into the picture. Malay weddings are renowned for their rich culture and religious beliefs.

Weddings are joyful moments and, irrespective of race or religion, it’s a time for traditions. Traditional Islamic marriage rites celebrating the Malay culture make up a Malay wedding, like the many meaningful and age-old traditions in Chinese weddings. You might find some of these practises similar to Chinese wedding traditions or those of other religions if you’re familiar with Malay weddings, while some are unique to Malay weddings. If you are unfamiliar, learn about some of the usual practises. Despite having evolved over the years, there are still some basic traditions and rituals that remain until this date, adopted from both Malay and Muslim culture.

Malay weddings appear to the uninitiated as extravagant festivities comprising numerous activities that seem to go on forever, rooted in traditions originating from a variety of rich cultural sources and, in short, a complete cultural enigma, with a confounding collection of rules and regulations. Well, no-more-enigma; we’re here to give you a little step-by-step insight into what’s going on at a Malay wedding.

Pre-wedding customs

Merisik

Although “spying” is the direct translation from Malay to English, this stage is better known as the man’s “viewing” of the woman, typically carried out by the parents or relatives of the young man to explore her background, interact with her family, and gauge the woman’s availability.

Meminang

Now is the time for proposal; date and time for the commitment are established once the parties are committed to each other and the exact amount is agreed for the duit hantaran or dowry tray-gifts.

Adat bertunang

This is the ceremony for the engagement. Typically, the aim of this event is to put a ring on the finger of the bride-to-be, usually done by female representatives of the groom (either the mother or a sister) in the setting of a big party, and the tray-gifts are exchanged, making the commitment official.

Adat berinai

Usually, this step occurs three days or so before the wedding; the bride’s hands and feet are adorned with henna. In Hinduism and Buddhism, the roots of this theory are meant to ward off bad luck and deceptive spirits, as well as to show that the couple is engaged.

The wedding customs

The wedding is divided into two segments; the Akad nikah and the majlis bersanding.

Akad nikah

The Akad Nikah, also known as the solemnization ceremony, includes a Wali for a Malay Muslim couple, usually the father of the bride, or if he is no longer around, the next male in the power of the family, – which means her brother, paternal grandfather or paternal uncle in that order, to give the bride away. The ritual also requires two Saksi-witnesses to validate the ceremony-and a Kadi, an official, who is educated in Islamic laws.

More modern couples may choose to skip out on the rest of the stages and just do the Akad nikah as marriage is the only really necessary step. The ceremony takes place either at the home of the bride’s parents or a local mosque and is only seen in front of family and close friends.

Akad Nikah signifies the beginning of the marriage, unlike the Majlis Persandingan, and is attended only by the couple and their family and closest relatives.

Majlis bersanding

This is a much larger party held for extended family, friends and acquaintances, better known as the wedding reception. It can take place in the afternoon, which is a more casual event without a fixed itinerary, or in the evening, which is more formal and may include a multiple course dinner and fewer guests.

The guests give their blessings in a practice derived from Hindu culture by throwing a combination of Bunga Rampai (finely cut aromatic Pandan leaf, sprayed with perfume) liquid rice flour and rose water over the pair, which are spread out on a tray. Bunga telur, the sign of fertility, is given to the guests who bless the couple (these are usually scented soaps, candy or chocolates at modern weddings).

Customs

Some may choose to host Bersanding events at the bride’s house and then the groom’s house, as well as larger receptions for extended family and friends in hotels, restaurants or community centres.

The newlyweds are treated as king and queen for their big day during the Bersanding ceremony.

Money has been the classic gift of choice at a Malay wedding and should be transferred in an enclosed packet to the parents of the bride or groom at the end of the ceremony.

What to wear?

Conservative, modest attire that is not provocative and headscarves for women are the dress code for the wedding proper. Traditional Malay clothes (baju kurung / kebaya for women; baju melayu for men) are the easiest choice.

Keep the modest dress code in the case of reception, but remember that you do not have to be in traditional dress-wear whatever you like.

What else?

They have a pre-wedding course!

Yes, they do.

This marriage training course prepares the couple and builds a solid base for their married life. Although participation has not been mandatory since 2015, couples are strongly encouraged to go through the marriage preparation course.

The preparation course for marriage is a two-day course offered by mosques and Islamic organisations. Couples will be briefed on the fundamental knowledge of married life and taught during the course how to address problems such as money management, wedding budget and in-law relationship management as husband and wife. Couples will be presented with a certificate at the end of the course to demonstrate that they have completed the course successfully.

Way to go!

Happy Malay Wedding!

You’re Invited To A Colombian Wedding!

Weddings are supposed to be a huge affair between two families. We love how heritage and culture shape the personality of an event. It’s amazing to know how uniting families’ heritage can be weaved into so many aspects of a wedding.

The concept of the wedding is the same throughout the world. One person proposes the other which is followed by a great wedding ceremony including friends and family. Now, these ceremonies could go a long way depending on the country or culture you belong.

See also:

Malay Wedding Traditions

Let’s take you to the South American part of the world – Colombia!

Background Check

Bordered by Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru, Colombia is the most northwestern country in South America. It is South America’s 2nd largest country and the world’s 3rd largest Spanish speaking country. Home to over 45 million people, before the Spanish arrived in 1499 to colonise the region, Colombia was originally populated by indigenous nations.

The nation remained very ethnically diverse even after Colombia obtained its independence from Spain in 1819, including descendants of the original native settlers, Spanish colonists, Africans brought from Europe & the Middle East as slaves and twentieth-century immigrants. There are metropolitan towns in Colombia, the Andes mountains, the Amazon rainforest, tropical grasslands, and the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

Religious Beliefs

Colombia is a largely Catholic nation, so with a few cultural additions, the ceremony is essentially the same. The first difference is the church decor. In improving the beauty of the church and symbolising the special union of marriage, flowers are a key element.

Crazy Hour and The Godfather. Get Ready for a Colombian wedding!

There’s no best man and no maid of honour at a Colombian wedding. There are a godfather and a godmother. The Godfather is on call 24/7 to provide the groom with marriage counselling, as the Godmother is for the bride.

The candle ceremony and the Serenata, among others, are traditional Colombian wedding rituals.

The candle ceremony that happens after the rings are exchanged is one of the most traditional customs. The groom lights the candle to the left, and the bride lights the candle to the right. They bring them together and light the candle in the middle while they both have their candles lit. Then they have to put out their original candles, and for the rest of their lives, they become only one body.

The majority of the Colombian traditions are seen in the reception. Similar to American traditions of the garter toss and the throwing of the bride’s bouquet, Colombians have their own take on these celebrations of the single guests. The first tradition is for all the single men to put their shoes underneath the bride’s dress. The bride then chooses a shoe and that man is the next to be married. Another custom is that all the single men take off their belts. The man with the longest belt “wins”.

All the male guests must wear Guayabera suits, made entirely of white cotton. Colombians are born dancers and have never been afraid to demonstrate their talent or dance moves, to be precise!

And now comes the reception

The reception also contains many Brazilian influences, they also use a celebration called Carnavalito in which masks are bought, colourful accessories are used, and Brazilian music used in the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro is played. Speaking of music, with vibrant Latin rhythms, all Colombians love to keep the party going. Typical music will be vallenatos, salsa, and reggaeton, just to name a few.

The Serenata is another Colombian wedding tradition. It is a pre-wedding tradition in which the bride is surprised by a romantic song that the groom dedicates to her. The Serenata is usually performed with a band, in front of family and friends, and is accompanied by a party that can last several hours.

In Colombia, one common wedding tradition includes the bride placing a coin in her shoe during the wedding. This symbolises her desire to never be in a position where she and her husband would never be without life’s essential necessities. It is also customary for the bride and groom to be covered with a mantilla, or lace veil, in some parts of Colombia, which shows that they are now a family under one roof.

Crazy Hour

You thought the wedding was over?

You’re wrong!

A conga line of drummers charged onto the dance floor and the DJ took over their beats. With beaded bras, mini skirts and feathers fanning out from their faces, salsa queens followed.

Mad Hour, that was it. Each Colombian wedding has a theme of its own.

The Food

The national liquor of Colombia, Aguardiente, is based on sugar cane, tastes like Sambuca, and is used in all kinds of festivities. Empanadas are one of Colombia’s most typical dishes, a meat turnover that can be produced in various ways. The region of Colombia from which an individual is from determines the exact recipes used. Platanos Fritos (fried plantains/ bananas) are also a typical Colombian side dish.

After they are fried, the riper the plantains are, the tastier they will be. Furthermore, Yucca, which is similar to a potato but is more fibrous, is a popular side dish that Colombians like to see at weddings and family events on their plate. Traditional aspects of the receptions are still in places, such as starter food, entry meal and cake, aside from the typical Colombian food.

What matters the most

The most important element is the togetherness of the couple’s family and friends, which is a pretty universal notion, of course.

Thanks for coming and have a nice trip back home!!

Turkey is immeasurably wealthy in culture and because of its recorded significance remains a traveler hotspot. Turkey has one leg in Asia and the other in Europe and this situating gives the nation its cutting edge character. One inseparable and characterizing part of that culture is its weddings.

Turkish weddings will in general be a rowdy undertaking. With a considerable rundown of visitors conveyed to inaccessible companions and family members, individuals guarantee no one is forgotten about. Try not to be shocked in the event that you end up getting a greeting while on a delight outing to Turkey.

There’s an inclination of harmony and respect about Turkish weddings. For sightseers, these weddings are a brilliant occasion to encounter the rich culture and liveliness of this multiethnic nation.

With the progression of time no uncertainty the cutting edge age is turning its back onto a portion of the old customs, however the harmless remainders are as yet kept up in any piece of the nation. In the event that that is given a kick to your interest, at that point continue to peruse this blog. You’ll get a total feeling of what weddings resemble in Turkey:

Henna, aka Kina night

Henna, otherwise called Kina is a little festival that happens about possibly 14 days before the wedding.

The lady of her preferred hour dresses in an outfit and praises the night with loved ones. After the festival, she changes once again into the more conventional outfit, known as bindable.

As of now, the man of the hour and his companions visit the lady’s home and hang tight outside for their entrance. The lucky man is joined by the lady of the hour and together they make the passageway to a customary melody.

Youthful, single ladies stroll before them holding out candles. The couple is needed to stroll in three circles prior to sitting down.

At last, a senior individual from the family begins the function by putting henna on the palms of the lady of the hour and husband to be. The parents in law need to pay a gold coin to have the shut clench hand of the husband to be opened.

The Processions In Wedding

Weddings all over Turkey will in general be somewhat extraordinary dependent on the local customs or the childhood of the lady and husband to be. In the far off town locale, the groups of the wedding couple spend close to three days in planning and festivity of the wedding.

In towns, nobody truly is an outsider and weddings frequently transform into a network festivity. The celebrations regularly occur at the public square. The nearby ladies set up the nourishment for the visitors and men play instruments for everybody to participate and move late into the evening.

The wedding scenes in urban areas can be definitely extraordinary. Here, the service normally happens in a salon. The event is exuberant however brief. The lawful service happens the very night as the gathering. Before long, food and rewards are served to the visitors.

Couples cut the wedding cake and afterward begin getting endowments from their visitors. Afterward, the band plays modern music for everybody’s pleasure. The couple sets trip for their special night the next day.

Womanhood Belt

The womanhood belt custom returns quite a while it’s actually viewed with some fondness. The convention includes a male individual from the lady’s family or some nearby relative wrapping a strip, alluded to as the chastity belt around the lady’s midriff multiple times prior to tying it.

The red strip should stamp the lady of the hour’s virginity, a nonattendance of which would have caused a commotion and tattle in the occasions past. In current occasions, nonetheless, Maidenhood belt has become a convention of decision. The lady can conclude whether she’d prefer to wear one or abandon it.

The Sole Of Bride’s Shoes

The specific convention is very like the bouquet tossing one in the Western nations. The lady of the hour’s companions compose their names on the sole of her shoes and those whose names focus on before the finish of the night are viewed as the next to get hitched. As a rule, everybody’s names should focus on except if they’ve utilized an indelible marker.

Blessings In Turkish Weddings

Extravagant blessings, fragile porcelain, toaster ovens and so on don’t settle on a decent decision in Turkish weddings. A monetary help is the best blessing couple can have as they set out on another excursion together.

So in the event that you have been welcome to a Turkish wedding, don’t pressure yourself over the decision of blessing. After the cake-cutting, red strips are tied around the love bird’s necks. Presently the visitors can bring their endowments normally gold coins or gems and tie them on to those strips.

The Car Convoy

Another lesser-known custom in Turkish weddings is that identified with the vehicle escorts. Normally, the entire escort, joined by the lucky man’s vehicle circumvents the roads, blaring their horns.

It might sound irritating, however Turks are quite accustomed to it and it works more like a reminder for the individuals who don’t know about a marriage in their general vicinity.

As a rule, a gathering of kids obstructs the entry of this guard sooner or later. Their point is to get cash out of the man of the hour’s pockets on this merry event.

Whenever they’re paid to their satisfaction, the guard’s entry is clarified. The couple would then be able to meet, get hitched and start another section in their lives.

Last Thoughts

So those were the absolute most basic Turkish convention still surviving around the nation. Expectation this blog gave you a comprehension of what’s in store in the event that you actually wind up in a Turkish wedding.

Much obliged for perusing. On the off chance that you preferred this blog, if it’s not too much trouble make sure to impart to other people and continue returning to discover additionally fascinating substance identified with weddings.

Weddings are exciting. They are like a gift box with several gifts inside, each one better than before. You can wait for the seasons of TV shows, web series, and sequels of movies all you want, but the kind of excitement one has for the weddings of cousins, relatives, and friends is unimaginable. In India, most families live in a close-knit structure where all the relatives stay connected through various festivals like Diwali, Holi, Rakhi, and yes, weddings. Weddings are more or less like festivals because there are large gatherings, exchanges of gifts, and lots of enjoyment. Trust me you are going to enjoy an Indian wedding much more than the next episode of Game of Thrones or Sherlock Holmes or Sacred Games.

Every coin has two sides. Weddings in India are certainly a grand affair. There is a list of rituals that have to be followed by the families of the bride and groom in the name of traditions. It is because these customs have been there for quite a long time. But no one has ever thought or dared to change them. Some of these rituals are pretty regressive. Indian weddings show us a clear picture of how Indian society functions. However, throughout India, one can notice that the rituals vary. For instance, drinking alcohol is a sign of celebration in Punjabi weddings but it may not be so in northeastern weddings. But it is a good sign that people have started molding these age-long rituals for their modern weddings. How long can one tolerate these regressive traditions which unrealistically bind the bride and groom? There is nothing wrong with rejecting the norms which don’t fit the collective ideology and go against an individual’s principles. But yes, it will take a lot of guys to go against the families and the society. So be ready to face some harsh backlash!

Imagine if Raja Ram Mohun Roy dared to discard such a prevalent practice called Sati, can we not dismiss the smallest rituals that demean the bride’s family. If society has the courage and power to outlaw Sati practice and makes child marriages illegal, then it can stop such regressive practices from happening in weddings. You must be wondering that when all these practices have been banned, what are those wedding practices which are regressive but still taking place. Don’t worry, fasten your seat belts, Girlossip is taking you on a ride of weird, immoral, and absurd wedding traditions which Indians blindly follow, so get ready!

Here is a list of weird rituals in India that need to be discarded for good, because if we don’t do it now, they will start polluting the young minds. If you are planning your wedding anytime soon, you must get rid of these weird, oppressive, sexist, misogynistic, and unreasonable rituals! Have a look at these customs and throw them away in the bin for good!

1. Kanyadaan

The first practice that involves following strict customs is Kanyadaan. It might have been true and relevant when the society was regressive and believed in misogyny but it is certainly irrelevant in today’s world. The literal meaning of Kanyadaan is a donation of daughters. However, it is a very problematic ritual because daughters are human beings and cannot be considered as objects of donation.

In earlier times, brides were sent to husbands in the form of offering. The husbands were considered to be Vishnu. Sacred rituals were performed to confirm Kanyadaan by the father of the bride. The women in India traded as objects from one place to another in the name of customs and traditions. When a father gives away his daughter to another man, it is considered an exchange of property but they forget that women aren’t a piece of property, they must be treated like human beings.

Furthermore, daughters must be ‘virgin at the time of marriage otherwise the wedding rituals are considered to be impure. This ritual is just too old-fashioned to be still carried on modern weddings. Many women are rejecting this ritual for good.

2. Entry Barred for the Mother

It is an age-long custom that the mother of the groom can be present at the wedding. In Hindu weddings, the groom’s mother is not allowed to be part of the baraat. At Bengali weddings, the mothers of both bride and groom are kept away from the wedding. This practice is not only weird but also immoral and disrespectful towards women. It is said that the mother can have a bad gaze at the wedding however there is no reason to support this narrative. There is a popular myth regarding Durga and Kartikeya (the son of Shiva) where this custom emerged. When Kartikeya was leaving for the wedding, it is said that his mother Durga was gulping down food because she thought that the daughter would not let her eat after the wedding. This led to Kartikeya disregarding the wedding in its entirety. Hence, to prevent marriages from getting broken or affected in any way, the mothers of grooms and brides are not allowed in the wedding. It is better to avoid such an absurd custom because it holds no relevance in today’s world.

3. Mangalsutra Wearing

Have you ever wondered why every identification mark of marriage is on women? Sindoor, bangles, toe rings, mangalsutra are all a part of bridal wear. Every woman is accustomed to wearing them as a mark of suhag. But this practice is not only recessive but also discriminatory. All the ornaments and accessories are to be worn only by women. Men have to wear an engagement ring and that too upon their discretion. There is a practice of mandatory women in villages to keep ghunghat till their torso. This purdah system emerged in the early centuries but it shouldn’t be prevalent nowadays.

Apart from that, the mangalsutra is considered a symbol of a married woman. It more or less becomes a part of their identity. Women are robbed of their dignity if they are married and do not wear mangalsutra. They are also considered ‘eligible and available’ for nuptial knots in the absence of this ornament.

A man can roam around the city as he pleases with whatever he wants to wear, but when a woman does it, she is considered a loose and characterless woman. To curb down such discrimination, it is very important to abolish the mandate of wearing a mangalsutra after marriage. Of course, women can wear one but only if it is their choice and not a compulsion.

4. The Kashi Yatra

India is a land of religions and rituals. We Indians have a great structure of belief system in God. Providing special privileges to men has been an integral part of Indian society. Similarly, even at weddings, grooms are provided special privileges to put them on a higher pedestal than women. This custom is not only absurd but also saddening. You may find it funny but in the undercurrent, the ideology behind this is quite hard-hitting.

So what happens is that the groom can announce that he doesn’t want to marry the bride anymore because he wants to travel to Kashi to seek higher learning and spiritual knowledge. If you know the Indian customs well, you would be aware that Kashi is a place of pilgrimage for devotees who have strong faith in God. Now the father of the bride is bound to beg and plead with the groom to marry his daughter. Yes, you heard it right – beg! The family of the bride suffers a lot through the wedding and preparations, but this ritual crosses all levels. It is regressive and should be eliminated as soon as possible!

5. The Feet-Wash

If you have been to several Indian weddings, you may have observed this custom. Since we live in a male-dominated society, the rituals mostly favor one gender. In this ritual, the entire bride’s family has to wash the feet of the groom. The husband is considered to be Shiva and that is why it is beloved that the bride’s family has to worship him like Lord Shiva. Even the bride has to behave all her life like a faithful wife that was Goddess Parvati. This practice is outright sexist and propagates discrimination because no such ritual is made for the groom or his family.

Why is it that the onus of falsely respecting the groom and his family lies on the bride and her family? You would have never seen the groom and his family washing the bride’s feet because it would be insulting right? Then, why is it prevalent for brides to do so in the name of tradition? It’s high time that we discard such practices, let alone adopt them.

6. Haldi

Half does seem like a fun ritual. People who love the Holi festival will certainly fall for this ritual too. The only difference between Haldi and Holi is that in the former, all colors are used. Most of the rituals are still practiced because nobody questioned them. It is also because it takes a lot of courage to challenge a tradition that has been a part of the societal structure for years.

The question here is of purity and hygiene. In most weddings, the Haldi is applied to a woman’s body once the groom has touched it. It is seen in Bengali weddings as well that the groom pours down the Haldi onto the bride and then she has to bathe with it. Now the question is how do you decide the purity of the groom? No human shall be mandated to perform such a ritual that can be unhygienic. Would a groom bathe from the Haldi that the bride has touched and applied? Sounds absurd right? Then brides should also not be mandated to perform such traditions which can harm their health.

7. The Balancing Act

A woman leaves her entire family, her home, her world to come and settle with her husband. This tradition is very cruel in itself. Can a man leave his family, friends, relatives, work, education, and live with his wife? If this sounds weird, then think how painful it can be for a woman. There is a strange practice in Bihar that seems to take things to another plane altogether. When the bride comes to his husband’s home, the mother-in-law puts several pots over her head one day after the other. The count of pots keeps increasing as the days pass by. This is done to resemble that the wife has to take care of all the household chores while balancing her married life. It would be fun if it was a game but in some parts of India, it is taken quite seriously. All the household work is done after the marriage with their pots on the head, and even if one pot breaks, the bride has to take all the scolding and hurtful comments from the family. It is needed in her mind that she is unworthy of everything and doesn’t know how to take care of the family. Such rituals are mental torture and must be eliminated from weddings at the earliest.

8. Marrying a peepal tree (Or a dog, take your pick!)

How would you feel if you had to be married to a tree or an animal before actually marrying a man? We will all have a good laugh at this ritual. It is sexist, weird, stupid, and irrational. You ask why? Let’s dig deep into this. The families consult the pandits to have a look at the star charts of bride and groom. The stars have to match perfectly according to astrology, otherwise, the wedding cannot take place. But if some stars are amiss, then the pandit recommends the family to get the daughter married to a tree or a dog to remove bad luck from her destiny. It is believed that whoever the bride marries first, all the bad luck gets absorbed in it. It may also be a peepal tree. Nonetheless, what seems bizarre is that when any such situation is faced by men, they can get away with it just by a prayer ceremony. So you know what to do. Just throw this patriarchal ritual away from your wedding.

9. Cooking for the Men

Cooking for men has been the perpetual responsibility of women. It is one such thing that women are known for. But it’s insulting how the entire burden of cooking for the family and taking care of the children is only on women. Whenever the groom’s family looks for a bride, the first thing they ask for is whether she knows how to cook. A good wife must be a good cook.

In Rabha weddings in Assam, the bride is burdened with tonnes of household chores as soon as she is married off. She has to cook food for everyone in the house, especially men. The worst thing in this ritual is that the bride is not allowed to eat or taste food that has been prepared by her. She has to cook the meal, serve them to men and then even take the dishes back for a wash. A woman who is leaving everything to live with a completely strange man has to face such severity. It is more or less a very cruel thing to do to a woman. She must be welcomed with warm hugs and comfort but this ritual makes it all worse. Don’t accept it at all no matter what the reasons are!

10. Bidaai

Since time immemorial, the brides are being wedded off to different households. Most of the time, these households and husbands are unknown. How can one live with a completely unknown man for life? We are all aware of Bidaai, a ritual in which the father and mother of the daughter request the groom to take good care of their daughter. But no one has ever questioned why females have been sent away to strange places in the very first place? It doesn’t happen in the case of men, they have the privilege of staying at their home and enjoying all the comfort but women have to dissolve their identity completely to adjust and fit in another family. Since childhood females are called ‘paraya dhan as if they are some pretty that has to be given away after a certain point of time. This completely vanishes away from the existence of a woman. We do understand that we live in a society and traditions and customs have to be followed but what is the use of rituals that only digress one gender and let another enjoy all the privilege.

Such rituals have to be stopped because it’s high time. We cannot keep living in the same era. People have changed and so have the ideologies. One cannot keep living their life according to society. So break the shackles of patriarchy and scrap away all these regressive rituals from your wedding. Only then the new generations will earn from you. Whenever a ritual is being performed at your wedding, question it, challenge it, and then carry it forward. Otherwise, all of us will keep remaining stagnant.

We all have important days in our lives for special occasions. These awaited days become the most crucial part of our lives. Weddings are one of these special occasions. The photographs and video albums are kept as memoirs to look back at the beautiful memories.

People want to look perfect on their wedding days. Apart from wearing customized clothing and matching accessories, we make sure to look our best shape. After all the pictures will be savored for life.

That is why people start stressing out weeks before the wedding. They follow a strict diet routine not just to lose weight but add glow to their skin. As it is rightfully said “No pain, no gain”. So if you are truly invested in becoming the best version of yourself for the wedding, you eventually will.

However, it is also true that weddings require tonnes of work which results in stress later. It happens especially when you are handling your wedding without the help of a wedding planner or other relatives. Anything can go wrong at the wedding, but you have to remember to calm yourself down. It can hurt your health.

Furthermore, weddings in Indian culture are more or less celebrated as festivities. There are several rituals to be followed before the wedding, it is a long affair. Till the time you reach the wedding day, you may feel exhausted physically and mentally and that is when you must put in all the efforts to rejuvenate yourself.

Few questions may pop into your head- ” How do I look my best at the wedding?” “How to maintain the best shape even after stress?” “What kind of diet to follow before the wedding?”

We are here to answer all these questions for you. The below-mentioned guide will help you to surf through the wedding gracefully. So let’s get started:

1. Sleep can do wonders!

There is a reason why our parents used to put us to sleep at 9 pm when we had to take up for school the next day. 8 hours of sleep is a must for any human body to function properly. When you sleep irregularly for short intervals, it starts showing on your face. You will get dark circles, your skin will become dull, the body will have no energy and your mind will refuse to react. Sleep deprivation can lead to many severe health problems. It is simply natural to stay up the nights weeks before your wedding day to make seating and catering arrangements, taking care of the clothing and decorations, and performing all the rituals, but it can lead to diminished health at the wedding. Sleep is very important for the human brain to function. Make it your priority no matter how much work is left. Prepare a sleep schedule in advance for weeks before the wedding so you don’t have to struggle through it during the rituals. A power nap is the magic trick which saves you from getting tired during the day. Scientists say that sleep can miraculously improve the way you feel by filling you with new energy. Maybe that’s why it is said – Sleep over it!

2. Put your body to work!

It’s time to put your lethargic body to work. Heard of Shake it, shake it? Well, you need to shake it until you make it. But just make sure you don’t break it. Our bodies are the first things to be compromised when it comes to weddings. It is ironic how we put in so much time, energy, and resources to make everything look perfect on the outside. However, inside the body, it is all messed up. It is true that when you feel good on the inside, you will automatically feel good on the outside. Don’t forget to take care of your body even during the wedding preparations. Even when the wedding will be over, the impact can be for the long term.

Introduce yoga, meditation, and physical exercise to your routine. It improves blood circulation and gradually the body will start feeling good. But don’t try to overdo anything. It is best to follow a training schedule which can put your body in shape. Don’t focus too much on losing weight, rather go for posture corrections, body built and nutrition. During the wedding madness, one needs to take proper nutrition to save up on energy. Even if you do want to lose weight, make sure that you don’t compromise on the nutrition.

Additionally, getting a trainer can be the best option to get the right exercises for the wedding . But it is not a one day thing. You will have to start training strictly months before to get the best results. Exercising can also help to destress from all the wedding shenanigans so it has a positive mental and physical impact. Believe that you will reach there in some time.

3. Let’s get dieting fixed!

Do you have any idea how dangerous skipping substantial meals throughout the day can be for your body? Planning a wedding is a great responsibility and it can be even more tiresome if you are the bride and groom. You may think that skipping meals can help you lose weight but it is quite opposite. It will only deteriorate the structure of your body. To surf through the jam-packed schedule of wedding arrangements, it is important to take proper healthy nutrition. Such schedules can also lead to low energy levels which calls for several illnesses. Who wants to be ill on their wedding day?

There are personal dieticians as well who can clear all your doubts regarding the diet plan before the wedding. Not just for the wedding, if the diet suits you and you are able to strictly follow it, you can even make it a part of your lifestyle after the wedding.

To get full nutrition and nourishment, one needs to start adding grains, fruits, green vegetables and milk products in their diet. Dry fruits are also a good option to be considered when it comes to energy food. It happens often that when you are busy running the arrangements, the water intake in the body certainly drops, this can lead to dehydration. To avoid this situation, carry a water bottle or portable grinder with yourself at all times to make smoothies and fresh fruit juices on the go. Only following the correct and structured diet can save you from catching illnesses, it will also build your immune system stronger.

4. Vitamins – the very best!

We have no understanding of our bodies. We don’t know what it needs, when it needs and how it needs! Proper nutrition and healthy diet can not be followed on guesswork. Even after following a certain diet schedule, the body requires other supplements too which are deficient in the body. You can check out the list of healthy vitamins which can be included in the diet and use them as supplements.

Vitamins are a great energy source and energy is all you need to get started with the wedding preparations. Moreover, the wedding rituals can also be long and tiring, so to maintain the energy throughout the day, you will need some form of energy intake in the form of vitamins. Vitamins are also capable of shooing away all the communicable diseases like cold, flu etc. Even if you catch some of these diseases, the Vitamin A and C intake can help you recover from it faster because it builds a good immune system. Vitamin D is a must to keep your body rejuvenated throughout the day. There will be certain situations in the wedding when you will feel like breaking down but a good vitamin diet will help you sail through it all smoothly.

So what are you waiting for? Prepare a list of Vitamin foods and start the intake as soon as possible to look your best at the wedding.

5. What is the use of stress, anyway?

Do you have any idea what kind of impact stress can have on your body? Sure it does affect our minds adversely but if it is not stopped, visible effects can be seen on the body. The bottom line is, carrying stress around can make you severely sick. Many researchers have claimed stress can drastically reduce the capacity of the immune system as well. Often we sacrifice our physical well being because we are all ‘busy’ in some form or the other. Body and mind need rest from time to time. Do things that you love, eat ice cream, take a long night walk, read a book, pamper your body. Yoga and meditation can also be of great help to calm the mind. During the wedding preparations, you will need a lot of calmness and mindfulness so practicing it in advance can be useful. Believe in yourself and breathe. Wedding will be fine, just don’t forget to enjoy it because those moments certainly are not going to come again!

India is popular for its big fat weddings. In every Indian wedding, one can find a loofah of cultures mixing with several rituals. It is easy to fly high in the sky but difficult to stick to your roots. Indian weddings have a rich heritage that differs in various locations. Nonetheless, if you have been to North East weddings, then you will forget about any other cultural wedding ceremony. Girlossip brings to you the most unexplored rituals done at homegrown weddings in India which can not be found anywhere else in the world. So hold onto your seats while we take you through a roller coaster ride.

When it comes to inter-caste and interfaith weddings, one can witness the merging of two cultures together. The bride and groom have different beliefs and that is what makes homegrown weddings beautiful and bizarre. Are you planning to include these customs in your wedding? If yes, then go ahead without a doubt because these cultural rites will make your wedding stand out. After all, we all imagine our weddings to be perfect and different.

What States?

India is a country of diversity. Every state has numerous wedding traditions. These customs include distinct rituals perfected by the families of bride and groom. It is a sad reality that not many people in India are aware of these traditions. It is because they are hidden inside the remote villages of several states.

When it comes to North East weddings, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur are some states that follow Northeastern wedding culture. You can choose a handful of rituals from the weddings in these states and plug them into your wedding. So when the guests arrive, they are blown away with all sermons, it will surely make your wedding the most distinctive.

Every state in India has a separate wedding culture depending upon the religion they follow or faith they believe. In Kashmir, Bengal, Orissa, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Kerala as well, people have a vibrant heritage with weddings. But if we go on discussing them, the entire blog will keep elongating itself. So let’s come back to our homegrown North East weddings.

Go for Girl Power

Indian society consists of substantial male domination. Whether it is education and employment or traditions and customs, women have to bear the brunt of the structure of the society. In wedding rituals too, one can see how women are always kept on the unfortunate side. However, when it comes to North-Eastern wedding ceremonies, the women are given more of a preference.

The most important reasoning behind this is that in the North-Eastern states, the women go out to work, take major family decisions, and share responsibilities equally. Their society is not male-dominated. The state of Meghalaya is the most leading representation of how to treat women with respect and equality in every sphere of society.

All the necessities of the bride are fully taken care of. The Dowry system has been abolished and prohibited by the law but it is still prevalent in some parts of India. However, in Northeast states, you will rarely find people giving dowry for their daughter.

You can say that whatever happens at a big fat Indian wedding, northeast weddings do the exact opposite. The groom takes the bride’s mother’s name after marriage. The groom has to live in the ancestral home of the bride to honor the women. The women of northeast states are considered the so-called ‘heads’ of the family.

But the most amusing ceremony in Northeast weddings is the ring ceremony. The bride and groom have to exchange the rings in bags containing betel nuts. If you are getting all geared up for your wedding, then this ritual can add up a little fun for relatives and friends.

No one can pick just one

Most Indian weddings have regressive customs because they are loaded with patriarchal norms. But some tribes like the Semas from Nagaland are going against the flow. They voluntarily practice polygamy to showcase their liberalism. But if that is too much for you, you can go for the concept of open marriages.

Even after being polygamous, they keep their customs intact. A man has to choose a ‘head wife’ amongst all the wives. Men have the freedom to marry as many women as they want. This selection of head wife can invite a flurry of family drama too but let’s just say, where there are pros, there are cons too. But this custom is that social structure is only restricted to their tribe.

Nagaland is a state of many tribes. The culture of civilization has not reached them and that has worked in their favor. The Changs (another tribe from Nagaland) also practice polygamy but the limit of their wives is set to six. People keep wondering why they chose the number six but the reason is not yet known.

It is clear that the tribes in Nagaland have stuck to their culture only, they have followed their norms with getting them infected with evolution. One such tribe is The Lotus, it bends on favoring rich men. The rich man of this tribe can marry twice and bring a second wife during polygamy.

Till Death Do Us Part

Now that we have discussed the rituals and tribes of Nagaland, it is time to explore Mizoram. This state is popular for its diverse traditions which create a great blend of orthodox beliefs and contemporary schools of thought. You can find Christian practices at weddings because the people in Mizoram practice Christianity spiritually.

There is a set system of marriage payment in Mizoram where the groom has to approach the girl’s family. After discussions and several opinions, a price is decided for the marriage. The best feature of marriages in Mizoram is that the bride and groom are provided time to know each other. This establishes a good bond between the couple before marriage.

The groom has to wear a Puandum given by the bride. It is a rug like apparel to be worn on the wedding day. You can include this tradition in your marriage too. However, there is a creepy tradition associated with this rug. It is believed that the groom has to wear this rug even after death. You may eliminate this part from the ritual if you have already been creeped out. That’s why this custom is named ’till death do us part’ quite literally.

Fowl Play

The Angami tribe gives the wand to the hands of the women of its tribe. The women can at any time cancel the marriage if they are not satisfied with the groom. However, the most important reason to be considered substantial is to call off the wedding is if she finds something inauspicious.

Many people in India are proceeding towards a vegetarian lifestyle. But the Angami tribe of Nagaland believes in strangling a fowl before marriage to get a good omen.

Are you worthy of the wedding my daughter?

It is only in the state of Tripura where the men have to get their blood, tears, and sweat to get wedded to a woman. You can lure your man too to woo you and follow the tradition of men from Tripura. Isn’t it exciting?

After all, one must marry a man only after checking if he has the potential to take care of you. The groom has to move to the bride’s house for a year and show his love towards the bride and her family.

And guess what? If you don’t like his behavior, his attitude, and his beloved, just send him right away. Yes, it may appear to be morally wrong but why marry a man who cannot be your perfect companion?

If you are up for the challenge, include this custom in your wedding and see how it goes.

Wanna take a trade trip?

Have you ever heard about the Mongsen tribe? Nagaland is abode to India’s most incredible and cultural tribes. Imagine going on your honeymoon even before the marriage. Sounds fun right? The Mongsen tribe sends the future couple on a trip, however, this trip is not just about joy and fun. The couple has to do some rounds to make profits, often called moolah by the locals.

Well, because what is a marriage without money? One cannot each love and drink care. But what if they make losses instead of profits? If there is no moolah, the couple is not allowed to marry. They cannot be considered a good team.

He will capture you (literally)

The state of Arunachal Pradesh has a treasure when it comes to unusual homegrown weddings in North East.

The first and the most conventional wedding is ‘Marriage by Negotiation’. Here the bride and groom have to negotiate on the terms, conditions, and everything else before marriage.

‘Marriage by Kidnapping’ and ‘Marriage by Eloping’ are considered social evils in Indian society but in Arunachal Pradesh, they are considered to be adventurous traditions full of thrill. Don’t consider kidnapping at all and if you try it, make it your own risk.

When it comes to helping with marriage, it has to be romantic. But everything comes at a price. The groom has to make a sacrifice by performing certain rituals recommended by the villagers. A little sacrifice for a romantic eloping wedding, why not?

Furthermore, the groom must convince the bride’s family for this kind of marriage. When the groom’s family approves of the wedding, the groom has to pack enough for 4 days of an extended stay.

Now the journey starts, the couple has to climb a mountain and shout to the top of their voice ‘Ho!’ to implicate that they’ve arrived.

It’s time for lunch from the bride’s family when the couple has reached the top. The lunch is followed by songs, dance, playing Holi with colors and all the gizz that a wedding ceremony consists of.

What is waiting for? Dive in these homegrown traditions to celebrate your wedding.
