The first thing that runs through my mind when I see a backless dress or a top, is the struggle that I would have to go through to find an appropriate bra. I’m sure I’m not alone in this, so ladies, if you’ve experienced the same dilemma, hopefully this article can help settle some doubts.
You’ve probably come across a backless bra, either online or at a lingerie store, and haven’t picked it up because you don’t own too many outfits that would require it, not to mention they’re generally more expensive than regular bras. But that’s probably because they serve a very specific purpose, and there are a variety of types available, depending on the kind of outfit that you want to wear it with.

It is an exceptional piece of lingerie without a doubt and can be a lifesaver, especially if one wants to go out to a special event, and you’re thinking about wearing an outfit that is either more revealing or is just too delicate to be worn with conventional bra. This is where backless bras shine; having revealed back adds enormous effect on the overall appearance and a good bra is what makes all the difference between looking classy and trashy. We’ve got some tips on how to get around this problem, and have also collected a list of bras that you can wear, depending on the occasion.
How to go braless:
- Stick on or Adhesive Bra: The most common type of stick-on bra is made of silicone. However, there are other options as well; ones that look almost the same as the silicone bra, but are made of foam. You can also get fabric ones that look more like a normal strapless bra that has had the back cut off. They usually have adhesive on the side wings to hold them on. Most lingerie stores stock the silicone type, and can usually be found in the section that stocks bra accessories -extenders, extra straps, etc.
- Nipple covers: Nipple covers are also known as petals or pasties. They are used to hide the shape of nipples and give breasts a smooth line under clothing. They have adhesive on them that enables them to stay in place and come in two varieties; one-use disposable or washable and reusable. They are generally worn when you are unable to wear a bra but can also be worn with one if you need the extra coverage. They are generally advised for women who have smaller breasts, while large busted women might want to opt for something that gives them a little bit more support.
- Breast lift tape: Breast lift tape are specially shaped pieces of tape that are designed to lift your breasts when you are going braless. They go on the tops of your breasts and lift upwards instead of supporting from underneath; useful for outfits where you can’t wear a normal bra but still want some support and lift. You can get them to fit a full range of sizes, so if you have larger breasts and have found other adhesive bras too small, then these are definitely a good alternative.
Backless bras:
- Multifunctional Bra: If you’ve got one of those dangerously low cut backs, that exposes most of your spine (attractive!), a multifunctional bra is a great option. It’s extremely versatile and you can actually play around with how you want to place your straps so essentially this bra can be worn with most outfits even the most challenging ones.
- U-Plunge Bra: If your dress not only has an open back, but requires a little cleavage as well, the U-plunge bra is a really good option, especially if you are looking for something that is not full coverage- so as to help with the cleavage- but also provides support while leaving you with an open back. Carrying of a low cut outfit is an definitely a task, so make sure that your bra is well adjusted and stays tight; plunge bras can be deceiving at first sight so while trying it on, you should move around to see how it feels and looks in various positions. It is advised to lean forward and sideways, basically testing the flexibility of the bra to see if it can handle it, without compromising on its integrity (and yours!). It is also good idea to consider how low your cut will be and pick the right bra accordingly.
- Backless Bra Converter: If the previously mentioned bras don’t satisfy you, backless bra converters can work as well. Considering the price it’s a quick and easy solution that allows to transform almost any bra into a backless bra. They can be found online, or larger lingerie stores as well.
There is also another option that exists, but one must be careful while taking this route because it could go wrong just as easily; wearing lingerie that can be seen through your dress. Considering this is something that we have been advising you against for the better part of the article, it might sound confusing. However, of late, there has been an influx of extremely artsy bras in the market. They come designed in such a way that the overall look just complements the outfit that you are wearing; combined with the right dresses or tops these bras look astonishing and can be the way to go when you feel like going out with a carefree look that represents a chilled and easy going personality while maintaining the elegance and grace. If all else fails, and things look like they’re going south quickly, you have one last weapon in your arsenal, DIY! Just take an old bra, cut out the cups and sew them onto the front of your dress. Just like that, you’re ready to go! However, make sure to choose the right material that will go well with your outfit, or you’ll just have two ruined pieces of clothing, and nothing ruins a night out like an outfit disaster.
