Welcome to a Malay Wedding!

The idea of wedding planning in itself is overwhelming, and the expectations that come with it are even more stressful when traditional culture and values come into the picture. Malay weddings are renowned for their rich culture and religious beliefs.

Weddings are joyful moments and, irrespective of race or religion, it’s a time for traditions. Traditional Islamic marriage rites celebrating the Malay culture make up a Malay wedding, like the many meaningful and age-old traditions in Chinese weddings. You might find some of these practises similar to Chinese wedding traditions or those of other religions if you’re familiar with Malay weddings, while some are unique to Malay weddings. If you are unfamiliar, learn about some of the usual practises. Despite having evolved over the years, there are still some basic traditions and rituals that remain until this date, adopted from both Malay and Muslim culture.

Malay weddings appear to the uninitiated as extravagant festivities comprising numerous activities that seem to go on forever, rooted in traditions originating from a variety of rich cultural sources and, in short, a complete cultural enigma, with a confounding collection of rules and regulations. Well, no-more-enigma; we’re here to give you a little step-by-step insight into what’s going on at a Malay wedding.

Pre-wedding customs

Merisik

Although “spying” is the direct translation from Malay to English, this stage is better known as the man’s “viewing” of the woman, typically carried out by the parents or relatives of the young man to explore her background, interact with her family, and gauge the woman’s availability.

Meminang

Now is the time for proposal; date and time for the commitment are established once the parties are committed to each other and the exact amount is agreed for the duit hantaran or dowry tray-gifts.

Adat bertunang

This is the ceremony for the engagement. Typically, the aim of this event is to put a ring on the finger of the bride-to-be, usually done by female representatives of the groom (either the mother or a sister) in the setting of a big party, and the tray-gifts are exchanged, making the commitment official.

Adat berinai

Usually, this step occurs three days or so before the wedding; the bride’s hands and feet are adorned with henna. In Hinduism and Buddhism, the roots of this theory are meant to ward off bad luck and deceptive spirits, as well as to show that the couple is engaged.

The wedding customs

The wedding is divided into two segments; the Akad nikah and the majlis bersanding.

Akad nikah

The Akad Nikah, also known as the solemnization ceremony, includes a Wali for a Malay Muslim couple, usually the father of the bride, or if he is no longer around, the next male in the power of the family, – which means her brother, paternal grandfather or paternal uncle in that order, to give the bride away. The ritual also requires two Saksi-witnesses to validate the ceremony-and a Kadi, an official, who is educated in Islamic laws.

More modern couples may choose to skip out on the rest of the stages and just do the Akad nikah as marriage is the only really necessary step. The ceremony takes place either at the home of the bride’s parents or a local mosque and is only seen in front of family and close friends.

Akad Nikah signifies the beginning of the marriage, unlike the Majlis Persandingan, and is attended only by the couple and their family and closest relatives.

Majlis bersanding

This is a much larger party held for extended family, friends and acquaintances, better known as the wedding reception. It can take place in the afternoon, which is a more casual event without a fixed itinerary, or in the evening, which is more formal and may include a multiple course dinner and fewer guests.

The guests give their blessings in a practice derived from Hindu culture by throwing a combination of Bunga Rampai (finely cut aromatic Pandan leaf, sprayed with perfume) liquid rice flour and rose water over the pair, which are spread out on a tray. Bunga telur, the sign of fertility, is given to the guests who bless the couple (these are usually scented soaps, candy or chocolates at modern weddings).

Customs

Some may choose to host Bersanding events at the bride’s house and then the groom’s house, as well as larger receptions for extended family and friends in hotels, restaurants or community centres.

The newlyweds are treated as king and queen for their big day during the Bersanding ceremony.

Money has been the classic gift of choice at a Malay wedding and should be transferred in an enclosed packet to the parents of the bride or groom at the end of the ceremony.

What to wear?

Conservative, modest attire that is not provocative and headscarves for women are the dress code for the wedding proper. Traditional Malay clothes (baju kurung / kebaya for women; baju melayu for men) are the easiest choice.

Keep the modest dress code in the case of reception, but remember that you do not have to be in traditional dress-wear whatever you like.

What else?

They have a pre-wedding course!

Yes, they do.

This marriage training course prepares the couple and builds a solid base for their married life. Although participation has not been mandatory since 2015, couples are strongly encouraged to go through the marriage preparation course.

The preparation course for marriage is a two-day course offered by mosques and Islamic organisations. Couples will be briefed on the fundamental knowledge of married life and taught during the course how to address problems such as money management, wedding budget and in-law relationship management as husband and wife. Couples will be presented with a certificate at the end of the course to demonstrate that they have completed the course successfully.

Way to go!

Happy Malay Wedding!

You’re Invited To A Colombian Wedding!

Weddings are supposed to be a huge affair between two families. We love how heritage and culture shape the personality of an event. It’s amazing to know how uniting families’ heritage can be weaved into so many aspects of a wedding.

The concept of the wedding is the same throughout the world. One person proposes the other which is followed by a great wedding ceremony including friends and family. Now, these ceremonies could go a long way depending on the country or culture you belong.

See also:

Malay Wedding Traditions

Let’s take you to the South American part of the world – Colombia!

Background Check

Bordered by Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru, Colombia is the most northwestern country in South America. It is South America’s 2nd largest country and the world’s 3rd largest Spanish speaking country. Home to over 45 million people, before the Spanish arrived in 1499 to colonise the region, Colombia was originally populated by indigenous nations.

The nation remained very ethnically diverse even after Colombia obtained its independence from Spain in 1819, including descendants of the original native settlers, Spanish colonists, Africans brought from Europe & the Middle East as slaves and twentieth-century immigrants. There are metropolitan towns in Colombia, the Andes mountains, the Amazon rainforest, tropical grasslands, and the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

Religious Beliefs

Colombia is a largely Catholic nation, so with a few cultural additions, the ceremony is essentially the same. The first difference is the church decor. In improving the beauty of the church and symbolising the special union of marriage, flowers are a key element.

Crazy Hour and The Godfather. Get Ready for a Colombian wedding!

There’s no best man and no maid of honour at a Colombian wedding. There are a godfather and a godmother. The Godfather is on call 24/7 to provide the groom with marriage counselling, as the Godmother is for the bride.

The candle ceremony and the Serenata, among others, are traditional Colombian wedding rituals.

The candle ceremony that happens after the rings are exchanged is one of the most traditional customs. The groom lights the candle to the left, and the bride lights the candle to the right. They bring them together and light the candle in the middle while they both have their candles lit. Then they have to put out their original candles, and for the rest of their lives, they become only one body.

The majority of the Colombian traditions are seen in the reception. Similar to American traditions of the garter toss and the throwing of the bride’s bouquet, Colombians have their own take on these celebrations of the single guests. The first tradition is for all the single men to put their shoes underneath the bride’s dress. The bride then chooses a shoe and that man is the next to be married. Another custom is that all the single men take off their belts. The man with the longest belt “wins”.

All the male guests must wear Guayabera suits, made entirely of white cotton. Colombians are born dancers and have never been afraid to demonstrate their talent or dance moves, to be precise!

And now comes the reception

The reception also contains many Brazilian influences, they also use a celebration called Carnavalito in which masks are bought, colourful accessories are used, and Brazilian music used in the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro is played. Speaking of music, with vibrant Latin rhythms, all Colombians love to keep the party going. Typical music will be vallenatos, salsa, and reggaeton, just to name a few.

The Serenata is another Colombian wedding tradition. It is a pre-wedding tradition in which the bride is surprised by a romantic song that the groom dedicates to her. The Serenata is usually performed with a band, in front of family and friends, and is accompanied by a party that can last several hours.

In Colombia, one common wedding tradition includes the bride placing a coin in her shoe during the wedding. This symbolises her desire to never be in a position where she and her husband would never be without life’s essential necessities. It is also customary for the bride and groom to be covered with a mantilla, or lace veil, in some parts of Colombia, which shows that they are now a family under one roof.

Crazy Hour

You thought the wedding was over?

You’re wrong!

A conga line of drummers charged onto the dance floor and the DJ took over their beats. With beaded bras, mini skirts and feathers fanning out from their faces, salsa queens followed.

Mad Hour, that was it. Each Colombian wedding has a theme of its own.

The Food

The national liquor of Colombia, Aguardiente, is based on sugar cane, tastes like Sambuca, and is used in all kinds of festivities. Empanadas are one of Colombia’s most typical dishes, a meat turnover that can be produced in various ways. The region of Colombia from which an individual is from determines the exact recipes used. Platanos Fritos (fried plantains/ bananas) are also a typical Colombian side dish.

After they are fried, the riper the plantains are, the tastier they will be. Furthermore, Yucca, which is similar to a potato but is more fibrous, is a popular side dish that Colombians like to see at weddings and family events on their plate. Traditional aspects of the receptions are still in places, such as starter food, entry meal and cake, aside from the typical Colombian food.

What matters the most

The most important element is the togetherness of the couple’s family and friends, which is a pretty universal notion, of course.

Thanks for coming and have a nice trip back home!!

Who doesn’t love a flawless face? Well we all do!

Skin Care is important but what compliments it more is – the right makeup look. Carefully highlighted cheekbones, skillfully achieved contour lines, this is art. But the most important factor here is – base. If your base isn’t flawless, your makeup will eventually start to look dull and cakey. Do we want that? Never.

A perfect base starts with foundation. If your foundation isn’t in place, it is definitely going to ruin your overall look. And therefore we’ve come up with our best tips that will help your foundation, breathe and your makeup, glow!

Take notes!

Get your primer

The texture of our skin on various parts of our faces varies in hydration. Unfortunately, as the base goes on, some of these differences are emphasised, which takes us to the point of putting on a primer before the base.

Primers form a barrier between the skin and the base, softening the texture and filling large pores so that the foundation can easily smooth down. Plus, to help balance out the texture as well, several hydrating primers hydrate dry skin patches.

If your skin is oily, especially around the T-zone area, you can use an oil-based primer. Note, you don’t have to use the whole face with one primer. With the proper primer, target particular issues and your base will look clean.

Blend it baby!

Blend. Blend. Blend.

Once you are done with the application, it is IMPORTANT that you blend it nicely. Let this step take some extra time. Use this as your mantra to a flawless base.

The best approach would be to use a damp beauty blender. Don’t rub your foundation on to your face, follow a dabbing motion and push the foundation into your skin. It’ll take time but it’ll be worth the shot.

Is the shade right for your skin tone?

A wrong foundation shade will totally ruin your makeup look, because if it is too orange, it will make your skin look grey. It is also important to ensure that the base is the best fit for your skin tone.

“The best way to test a foundation shade is in natural daylight, swatch it from the top of your cheek to your jawline to ensure it’s the perfect tone throughout the face”, says Amy Conway, BB Pro Artist at Bobbi Brown.

Less is more

Avoid adding too many layers of foundation. Most of us assume that applying foundation all over the face will give a better look, but this is not necessarily the case.

“For me, foundation should only be applied where needed. It is used to even out the skin tone and applied directly to the areas of concern (redness, pigmentation, shadows and blemishes) then blended out across the good skin,” says Florrie White, makeup artist who has worked on the faces of celebrities such as Emilia Clarke and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Prep prep prep

Prepare your skin nicely before applying any makeup product on it. Making sure your skin is adequately prepared will help you achieve a perfect finish easily. The foundation will stick to the skin and settle into patches if your skin is dry.

The key here is to be patient. “I apply any serums, moisturiser and eye creams before applying foundation and let them sit for a minute – which is a good time to wash your sponge! You need to let your skincare product rest and sink into the skin first. If you don’t, too much product will cause product pilling, which is when the product rolls into little balls,” says Liz.

It’s necessary to make sure you prep your skin every day. “Always clean every remnant of yesterday’s makeup and pollution the night before, moisturised and any concerns treated. Foundation blends much smoothly onto well prepped skin.” recommends Florrie.

She further adds, “If you are retouching your foundation at the end of the day, a light spritz of a hydrating skin spray first will prep and pep up the skin surface so the fresh application of foundation will blend easily in; avoiding a thick, cakey base.”

Set your makeup

Baking is important.

If you want your makeup to last all day, it is important that you bake it. “Normally I use a powder puff and press a loose powder into the T-zone as this is the most oily area.” Liz says.

Florrie says “you can choose a foundation which also has properties which work with your skin concerns albeit oily, dry, combination and/or acne”, meaning you can set your base accordingly.

“I prefer to use blotting paper to remove excess dewiness while avoiding adding another layer of a product to your skin.” She adds.

Pick the right tools

“As a makeup artist I turn to sponges to press off any excess after for more of a matte finish. But as a top tip, whether you prefer brushes or sponges, always press your foundation in with your fingertips after application. Nothing imitates skin more than your own hands, so by pressing the face gently this will melt the makeup into the face for an even more natural look.” says Amy, a famous make-up artist.

Clean your brushes

Forgetting to wash your makeup tools could cause a spread of bacteria, resulting in spots and a dull complexion. After every use, both Liz and Florrie recommend washing the brushes and beauty sponges.

“Brushes and sponges will harbour bacteria so important to keep clean. Forget special potions and cleaners, I use an antibacterial washing up liquid as it will remove the oil from the foundation easily. Foundation brushes should be synthetic so washing these in washing up liquid is fine. For real hair brushes I treat them like hair and shampoo and condition,” says Liz.

Bonus- One quick tip:

“Cooler tones often tan a pink/cinnamon shade, and should opt for cooler foundation shades, including cinnamon tone bronzers and even grey tones in the eyeshadows. Warmer tones rarely burn, and should opt for yellow undertone foundation with golden shades in bronzer and taupe tone shadows.”

Stuck in heavy traffic? Guess who’ll slide through all the vehicles? Two wheelers of course!

Two wheelers are the best. And it’s even easier to learn to ride them.

Know how to ride a bicycle? Great!

Don’t know how to ride one? Not a problem!

In this article, we’ll tell you how easy it is to learn scooty without knowing the bicycle. Let’s get started

#Step 1: Get your learner’s license –

Once you’re finished learning the basic traffic rules and regulations, sign boards and other signals, it is mandatory to get yourself a learner’s license. Not just that, you’d require your scooty’s registration, insurance and other relevant documents aligned before hitting the road with your new found love.

Always make sure that you have all the documents handy with you whenever you hit the road.

#Step 2: Balance is the key here –

Ask an experienced rider to drive your scooter, such as a wide parking lot or open garage, to an open practice area. Now, get on the scooty with confidence and trust.

In case you are tall enough, put your feet flat on the ground, then you can put one foot on the scooty and another one in the field. Make a strong grip over the handlebars afterwards.

Try on the Scooty to support yourself.

#Step 3: Try some ‘at home’ exercises –

You can start by balancing yourself over it and trying to ride in straight directions, whichever scooter is your concern. Keep practicing this step in a straight direction until you are great at locomoting yourself.

Turn the handlebars to the right to balance the slope if the scooter leans to the right. The scooter leans to the left, and the handlebars turn to the left. This holds the scooter upright because of the front fork’s “rake” and “trail” on just two wheels. Practice riding at various velocities in as straight a line as possible before making an intentional turn.

You can try steering the scooter in the left or right direction after practicing and learning locomotion in a straight direction. Start going in a straight direction and attempt to steer to the left or right. Practice this until you’re great at directing your scooter in any direction you like.

Since you have learnt moving and steering your scooty in a straight direction, you can now try this exercise of riding the scooter on the ground in a circular pattern. Which means, you startmoving your scooty in a straight direction, and steer in that particular direction. Keep your steering handle bar in the same direction, so that you keep on riding in a circular pattern. Keep practicing this.

Now once you’re finished learning to ride in different directions, you can start with the pattern ‘8’. You start riding in a straight direction and steer in one direction, complete a circular pattern and then immediately steer in the opposite direction to complete another circular pattern. Keep steering in both directions after completing circular patterns.

#Step 4: Hit the road –

Get the scooter started and put your helmet on. Make sure it fits nice and tight and does not shift about constantly on your head. To stop forgetting, always wear a helmet when riding your scooter, and always put it on before climbing on your scooter.

Now, since you have safely started your scooter, let ‘s start riding it. When you are riding it for the first time, please make sure you are on a nice, smooth surface. So start leaving the brake lever slowly after starting the scooter and you will find that the scooter has started going forward. Gradually, with the help of the accelerator, leave the brake lever full, put your legs up on the footboard and start giving it a throttle.

Slightly twist the throttle and you will find you’ve reached 30-40 kmph in no time. Don’t cross 40 kmph as you are a novice and keep riding on a straight road, at a steady pace. You can try sitting in a constant position, and maintain balance of the vehicle. You can keep your legs down if you are afraid.

Train starting and stopping while turning as a rider to hone your abilities. These movements on the road, such as stop signs and traffic signals, will often be required.

It is great to have an experienced rider follow behind while riding on the road for the first time to give you pointers on the route. There is no substitute for experience here, so do not drive on the street at any time above your skill level.

#Step 5: Break and turn –

So, now that you’ve started riding a scooter at a decent pace and know how to balance it, the next thing you need to know is how to apply the brakes. As mentioned earlier, the right lever is the front brake, while the left lever is handled by the rear brake. By applying the rear brakes, i.e. by pressing the left lever, try to gradually decrease the vehicle’s speed.

Don’t hit the brake button suddenly, as the tyres may skid. Apply the front brake after hitting the reaching your destination to stop it completely. You need to place your one leg on the ground to turn the scooter, and show the handlebar its direction. At slow speed, turn the vehicle and use the brakes accordingly.

#Step 6: Taste the traffic –

Now that you know all the basic stuff about a scooter and know how to handle it properly, it’s time for you to take it on the roads. If you are riding on the city’s main roads, it is advisable that you take someone with a driving licence as the pillion.

You need to drive on the main roads and learn how to navigate through the traffic in order to become a good rider. Depending on the traffic situation, you must continuously adjust the acceleration, throttle response and apply brakes. Don’t lose your faith, ride with great confidence, but don’t be overconfident.

Pro tip: Do not race on public roads.

Happy Riding!

What do I do to lose weight?

How do I manage my diet?

Why am I not achieving my body goals?, and the list goes on.

You, I, everyone, are guilty of scrolling through our feeds to check out the fitness journeys of people around us. And all of these questions hit us every now and then. As much as you want to achieve your desired body type, it is important that you understand your body first.

To assess the similarities in the human physique, doctor and psychologist William Herbert Sheldon studied thousands of images. And he came to the conclusion that there were only three forms of general body that he called somatotypes.

The three somatotypes in constitutional psychology include endomorphy, ectomorphy, and mesomorphy. In this article we’ve tried to cover all three types of body types that exist and how you can find yours. Let’s read.

Ectomorph

Mesomorph

Endomorph

Ectomorphs:

An ectomorph appears to be slim as either body fat or muscle, and fails to gain weight. They can eat stacks of food, and still look the same. People who struggle to gain muscle are also referred to as “hard-gainers.”

They also have a high metabolism, allowing their bodies to quickly burn calories. As a consequence, without much body fat, they’re also very skinny.

Ectomorphs tend to have a lean structure, long arms, and thin abdominal muscles. They can look skinnier than they are, especially in the calves and forearms, even if an ectomorph manages to put on weight.

Linearity and fragility of relative predominance

Higher sensory sensitivity is caused by greater skin surface area compared to body mass.

Have a disposition that is more introverted, reflective, inhibited, and sensitive.

Mesomorphs:

There is a middle-of-the-road structure of the mesomorph which takes the best of both worlds. They tend to have broad shoulders, a narrow waist, relatively small joints, and bellies with round muscles.

In brief, you have a normal propensity to be fit and moderately muscular if you’re a mesomorph. But you might be able to “bounce back” more quickly from being out of shape than the other two forms of body, building muscle and burning fat with comparatively quick burning.

Mesomorphs are hard to miss, with their extraordinary muscle mass, wide bones, and rectangular form. Mesomorphs, depending on their health objectives, have the potential to lose or gain weight.

Relative predominance in the body structure of muscle , bone, and connective tissue.

Outline: heavy, rough, and rectangular.

Have a personality that is more active, dynamic, assertive, and aggressive.

Endomorphs:

The endomorph appears to gain and hold onto weight. With a thick rib cage, large shoulders, and shorter limbs, their construction is a little broader than an ectomorph or mesomorph. They can have more muscle than any of the other kinds of body, but without large quantities of associated body fat, they also fail to obtain it. If you ever feel like you are adding extra pounds just walking around a donut store, you may be an endomorph.

Endomorphs, particularly in their legs, are powerful. They gain muscle very easily, but they can also gain fat easily, which can be difficult for them to lose. A sluggish metabolism is the explanation for this, so a sensible diet is an absolute must.

Significant predominance of soft roundness in different body areas.

The digestive viscera is more vast and the body economy is relatively dominant. Have a disposition which is more relaxed, happy and extroverted.

The easiest way to classify the type of body is to critically determine yourself. A body type quiz can also be attempted, but a quick look in the mirror works too!

Here are the characteristics to look for:

Ectomorph: There’s almost no fat on your body, a wiry frame, and long , slender limbs.

Mesomorph: With a balance of muscle and fat, you have a proportionate figure.

Endomorph: You’ve got a stubborn frame and strong , sturdy legs.

Improving our health and wellbeing is one of the most important ways to start when building an exceptional life.

Not only can taking up an exercise regimen offer the physical advantages of improved energy levels and stamina, but it can also do wonders for your mental health.

But it could do more harm than good to literally throw yourself into intensive training.

And why?

Because it is important to adapt every workout routine you pick that suit your body type.

What body type am I?

Even though three definitions give us a solid base to build on, there is a litany of other variables at play here.

Visualize there is a triangle with one of the three types of body representing each point.

At any point within the triangle, we humans may exist, from storing fat easily to not easily gaining weight to building muscle well. The fact is that we all have certain components of each of these.

It falls down to –

Some individuals tend to store more energy as fat and are less efficient.

Some bodies are quite powerful at muscle development.

Few bodies are poor at building muscle.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that your body type will be exactly the same as listed above. It may fall down into a mix of categories. We hope this article might have opened up a little window to what you want to look for.

It can be hard to know how to react when a colleague is rude to you. In the expectation that the individual will stop, some people are tempted to let violent behaviour slip. Others find themselves battling back. When a coworker treats you badly, how do you change the dynamic? And if the conduct continues or gets worse, how do you know when you’re dealing with a real bully?

The best kind of professional fireworks can also arise from such random sets of colleagues: sparky, satisfying partnerships, meaningful friendships, and brief but fond acquaintances. But you will find yourself stuck with a non-team player every once in a while, a bully, a jerk, or someone who is just continuously belittling or condescending.

The very first step is to identify what’s causing the behaviour. Research from Nathanael Fast, an assistant professor at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, proves a popular idea: when their pride is challenged, people act out.

“We often see powerful people behave aggressively toward less powerful people when their competence is questioned,” he says. “People who are skilled and well-liked are the most frequent targets precisely because they pose a threat.” So, it can stimulate the ego of the abuser.

You don’t need to be rude in return:

The reflexive response to rudeness, even for the most wise among us, would be to retaliate with the same. Hatefulness can be just as infectious in its own way as the seasonal cold sweeping through your department, says Porath.

You may have the sharpest putdown ready to fire, but note that the office jerk will not be silenced by a withering takedown, only inflamed, and potentially escalated into open confrontation by their one-sided rudeness. Avoid their zingers, reduce your interactions, and be short, polite and firm when you have to deal with them.

Spend time with colleagues that make you happy:

“Everybody should have alliances at work — peers and people above and below, who can be your advocates and champions,” recommends Woodward. Communicate to such friends and see what they can do to support, whether it’s just confirming your stance or communicating on your behalf. Of course, you can consult your HR if the situation escalates. But before that, Woodward says, “you owe it to the relationship to try to solve it informally,”.

Make sure you have a cluster of energizers to balance them if there is a crippling de-energizer throughout your workplace. Who are the individuals who support you in your workplace? Who are all who, in the first place, represent why you took this job? Even if it’s for a fast coffee break or a stroll around the block, spend time with them. And don’t allow your de-energizer dealings to force you to cancel plans with family and friends.

Nurture a sense of flourishing on your own:

A sense of prospering will make things easier for you to reframe the put downs and disrespect of your coworker so that they may not sound as harmful. How far would you let someone drag you down? ‘Porath asks. “In large part, you really do get to decide how you interpret incivility, the meaning you assign to it, and the stories you tell yourself. You also get to control whether it makes you feel bad or not.”

In many ways, you can add up your sense of prosperity, including getting enough exercise and sleep, eating a diverse diet, and prioritising your interests and hobbies without work. Make positive changes at work, such as finding a mentor or doubling down on your personal objectives.

Talk and observe:

In certain situations, you can decide to talk it out with your obnoxious coworker, particularly if you can point to a specific experience or pattern of conduct. Before you do, Porath recommends you ask yourself these questions:

Is their conduct deliberate?

Is their actions special, or is it part of a culture of incivility in general?

Once you have arranged a meeting, choose a reasonable time to chat and pick an atmosphere where both of you can feel relaxed. One thing to consider: Does it help to have other people (e.g. your boss or someone from HR) as witnesses or mediators? Invite them if so. And you can find it helpful first, even role-play the conversation, to rehearse your phrasing, ideas and approach.

Try not to take it personally:

Keep calm and carry on, as they say. It’ll feel like this person is threatening you if you take things personally, and in turn, you’ll activate a fear response mechanism in your brain.

You tend to make less apparent and rational choices when that happens, and you resort to more emotional ones. Note, maybe this person is trying to annoy you. And if you let her, say, by lashing out to protect herself and telling her what a jerk she’s like, you’re just going to be playing in her hands right now. In a negative circumstance, be cool, optimistic, and never underestimate the potential of kindness.

“What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.”

Core values to consider

Do’s:

Know that most individuals at work behave aggressively because they feel challenged

Question yourself whether the situation is too emotional or misunderstood.

Call out the wrong actions at the time

Don’t’s:

Take all the blame: many bullies choose highly qualified and well-liked targets.

Escalate the situation before you have managed to settle it informally and with the support of your allies
