2. Consider material:

When looking for a bra, you need to factor in things other than the cup and band size; material is important as well. The elasticity of different materials vary, so chances are that the same size in different material will not give you the same support. Experts suggest that when you’re bra shopping, you’re likely to have a better idea of the fit when you first place your breasts into the cups while bent over, and then stand up to hook it shut. This way you will know if the cups are the correct fit for you. 

6. Strappy problems:

A major problem many women have with buying bras is that, no matter how much support they claim to provide, the straps still dig in and cause extreme discomfort. One way to deal with this is to look for bras with wider straps, and preferably ones that are padded, so that they sit comfortably on your shoulders. There is a way out of this situation; buy a good sports bra! If you’re not familiar with this statistic already, 80% of the women who buy bras, aren’t buying the ones that they need. When the same thing happens while buying sports bras, you’re putting yourself through a lot of unnecessary discomfort, especially when your breasts are depending on you to keep them in place. Sports bras are often more expensive and the quality ones will be even more so, but it is definitely worth the investment. The next time you go shopping for a sports bra, these are some of the things to keep in mind: 

1. Make sure the band is a firm fit:

Move over cups, the band is the real MVP; most people tend to focus on the size and the shape of the cups while choosing a sports bra, but the real support comes from the band that hugs your rib cage. It provides 90% of the support necessary, and for that reason, should offer a firm fit, with minimum slack. When picking out a sports bra, go for one that has a band that is a little tighter than that of a regular bra and make sure that it lays flat against your chest, without riding up in the back. 

2. Don’t buy the wrong size!

As discussed earlier, 80% of the women (a sizable amount of the population) wear a bra in the wrong size, and unless you’re part of the enlightened 20%, this is for you. While compression bras are more popular- the most that they do is hold your breasts back- encapsulation bras offer you the best amount of support; the breasts move in a figure-eight motion, and a compression bra is not capable of efficiently handling that much movement. 

4. They have a short life: 

If you’re like me, you still have a couple of sports bras from a couple of years ago, lying around in your drawer. You probably don’t wear them that often, but you should know that a typical sports bra only serves its purpose for a year or so, because of the intense movement that it goes through; you’re definitely not doing yourself any favours when you put that on and go for a run. The fabric in a sports bra loses its elasticity a lot faster than normal bras do, so it’s advisable to keep changing out those bras at the end of the year. 

5. If you’re large chested, you don’t necessarily have to put on two bras:

Been there, done that. Very unpleasant experience. Girls that I did PE class with would bitch about the fact that they had to put on two bras that day because of extra activity; “that’s the only way they don’t hurt.” Well, you probably haven’t looked hard enough for the right sports bra in that case; double-bagging isn’t the only option. For women with a larger bust size, you should go in for bras with an underwire, as it provides the support that is necessary. 

6. What fabric is it made of? 

This should ideally be a no-brainer, but as mentioned earlier: 80%… you get the picture. Cotton might seem like the obvious choice, as it allows the air to flow through and is lightweight, but is actually a bad idea for athletes as it retains water like a sponge. Furthermore, it cannot withstand heavy movement and provide the necessary support the way some other fabrics can. Instead, look for bras made of material that is ‘breathable’ and ‘moisture-wicking’- pulls the moisture away from your body.  

7. Invest in more than one sports bra: 

Good sports bras are expensive. And buying more than one at a time is not an option for most women shopping on a budget but a little more money spent will give you a much better deal in the long run. You can’t wear the same bra to a workout over consecutive days, because they take a lot more time to recover than regular bras. If you work out regularly, make sure that you have enough to rotate them in such a way that you only wear one a week. 

8. Check out your options!

Finding a good bra, at the end of the day, is essentially a waiting game. Familiarise yourself with the different kinds of options out there, and try on at least a few before you commit to buying one. Find a brand that has what you’re looking for and try out different styles to see what works for you. The extra time and money invested will definitely pay off at the end of the day.

Plus size is nothing more than the name given to the sizing of garments that are larger than the average size. And the word average is important here; due to geographical and ethnic differences, women’s bodies are built differently all around the world. Support 

There are so many different preferences when it comes to lingerie, especially because wearing lingerie is a very intimate thing. If you want to find lingerie that provides an adequate amount of support you will need to look for things that are not plain lace; lace is not comfortable or very effective when it comes to support. The pieces that provide support will have underwire, or will be some kind of push-up cups; most women fall victim to this because they don’t know any better- it is going to either lift with the bra straps, or squeeze you really tight to stay up, both of which are bad for you. And if you go for a strapless option, not only will it squeeze around your breasts and give you a second boob next to your armpit, it will also create a roll of back-fat since it is so tight. In order to avoid the double boob and extra back roll, you should consider going for a corset type bodice that will encapsulate your torso all the way from your belly to breast; not only will this help in distributing the weight and pressure, but it will also give you a smooth silhouette and make sure that you don’t have a fat roll or a second boob. 

Shape

Lingerie can create the perfect hourglass shape if you buy the right style, and it can show off your natural curves. If you want the lingerie to be more comfortable, and not tuck in at various places, then you should go for a babydoll style top, lace or see through fabrics. We would recommend the corset bodice if you’re going for an hourglass figure, as it provides a good amount of support while ensuring that you are comfortable; the bodice can be made of really soft stretchy fabric so it gives the illusion of an hourglass shape, or can be made like an old fashioned corset that will be really stiff and mold your body into that shape. Most of the corset bodices go over the hips and end at your panty line, which not only helps in holding everything in place, but also creates a streamlined shape.

Corsets can lace up, hook up, or zip up. When you are buying one, make sure you are comfortable with how to put it on, because you might not always have someone around to do it for you. Here’s a tip to put a corset on by yourself: flip it around so you can see what you’re hooking, then when it’s secure turn it back around.

Bras

If you are going to wear your lingerie outside the bedroom, then I suggest you get one with more support; it can still be fancy, but if you want it to do what your regular bra does, then get one with support and coverage. It is a misconception that lingerie is only meant for the bedroom; having something sexy under your regular clothes is a great way to boost your confidence through the day. Don’t just take our word for it, give it a shot! 

A great way to feel sexy in a lingerie bra is to get one that is push up. Push up bras really do lift, and make your breasts look much larger (not that you need them to of course, but there’s a time for everything.) Many lingerie sets do not include the push-up cups, so if you want a set that comes with the same, make sure to specify that in your search.

Underwear

When looking for lingerie bottoms that are sexy and comfortable, you should check out these two options- thongs and boyshorts. The most comfortable lingerie bottoms are made of a stretchy mesh material- could be regular mesh, or ruffles, or lace- and they sit comfortably on your body because they take the shape of your hips. Since they are so thin, it feels like you aren’t wearing anything, which is definitely in a win in our book. If you’re looking for other options, there are also bottoms with more coverage like a full brief, or less coverage like a g-string thong.

You can get regular bottoms that have a crotch, or go for a crotchless option. While the crotchless sounds complicated and exotic- the crotchless isn’t just a front and a back piece flapping in the wind, there is elastic that goes on the outline of the crotch with fun added details- it can take some getting used to, so make your decision wisely. It is also important to remember that sometimes panties as a category, come with their own sizing, especially if you are buying them separately. So keep looking until you find a pair that are truly meant for plus sizes.

Types

Bodystocking

I had no idea that this section existed until very recently and it can surprise you with the amount of options that are available; it’s a very popular choice as well! Bodystocking lingerie is a fun and racy style, with a lot of options for variety; it’s basically like wearing tights all the way up to your shoulders. Most of the ones available online do not look like they would provide any shape or support to your body, so if you’re considering picking up a pair, you should know that you are going to be showing off your natural curves, and highlighting your silhouette; not a bad thing at all!

Bodystockings typically have an open crotch, and have some kind of lace or fishnet detail; the detailing makes it look pretty and sexy, not like a plain pair of tights all over (that’s just a strange picture). Bodystockings are typically very cheap, so don’t be surprised if yours gets a snag or a hole quickly. To stop the snag, use clear nail polish at the start of the snag, and the ends of where it runs. This should keep that one spot from running even worse. Keep in mind that since it does not have a shape of its own, it will start to get loose after the first (or second) wear, so don’t depend on it to last you a long time.  

Babydoll

A baby doll is a piece of lingerie that typically consists of 2 parts: a flowy top and a cute pair of matching underwear. The top has some kind of built-in bra and then the fabric is loose and flowy, ending just below the butt. Interesting fact: it’s called a baby doll because it looks like the dresses on the little baby dolls at the store that barely cover the diaper; a very innocent origin for something that spices up the bedroom! Babydoll lingerie are a great option for women who are conscious of their body because they are not figure hugging, but sexy nonetheless. There are several options when it comes to selecting the material, but most often, the fabric below the bra will be some kind of sheer or lace fabric that shows off all the curves underneath.

Chemise 

There is a difference between a chemise and a negligee, even though they are basically the same style; a negligee is usually see through. A chemise looks a lot like a baby doll in terms of structure because the material ends just above the bum, but the difference is that it doesn’t always come with a matching panty. Another (big) difference between the chemise and a baby doll is the fabric; chemise tops typically are made of silk or satin to give you that soft and glamorous feel; they are so soft and smooth, making you feel instantly more luxurious and sexy.

In addition, chemises don’t usually flare out over the hips the way a baby doll does, they fit like a slip; a silky chemise really does look like a fancy silk slip, usually with some lace around the top. The silky chemise is more like a pajama feel- very comfortable with nothing tight or pinching, and is a great option to sleep in, even if it’s just you! 

Form fitting chemise

This is another style that is very popular among women, and with good reason; they have the most variety of fabrics, designs, and colors! The form fitting chemise is very different from the silky one; usually the bust has some sort of bra or fabric that outlines the breast, they come with a  matching panty, and often have garter clasps, to complete the look. The form fitting chemise looks super sexy (and feels even better) because it highlights your curves without being extra tight like a corset. Often the sides or front will have ruching, which is very slimming and pretty. The fabric styles are all different, but usually will have some amount of spandex or elastic in them to hug your curves, giving you that hourglass look.  

This is one of the lingerie styles that are also used as the basis of some of the role play/ costume outfits that are available and will definitely spice up your night; if you need some suggestions, look no further than a french maid or a nurse, your partner will definitely love it! However, a word of caution: whatever style you choose, you should know that the fabric of a form fitting chemise is not going to be smooth and comfortable like the silky chemise; if the lace is touching extra sensitive parts of your body, it will be itchy, so it is advisable to not wear it for too long. 

Teddy

A teddy is a piece of lingerie that resembles a one piece bathing suit. Some teddies are thin and lacy, while others kind of look like a form fitting chemise. They are all one piece, so the panty is not separate from the bodice. A lot of the teddies available on the market are crotchless (with good reason), and may come with garter clips for a complete finished look. The teddy allows your natural shape and figure to be the star of the show, while ensuring that you are very comfortable. They are available in a variety of materials, but we would definitely recommend lace of you are going for this style.

Garter set

And finally, the finishing touch. A garter set is a fun way to instantly spice up any lingerie set. In fact, a lot of sets- like corset tops and form fitting chemises- come with the elastic clips that hold up the stockings. You can pair a garter belt/stocking set with a fun bra, baby doll top, chemise, or corset. Or you could just wear it on it’s own. It can look a bit complicated to put on, but after you’ve tried it a couple of times and you’ve got the hang of it, it’s not as complicated as it looks. The clips that hold the stockings up are kind of like clip on earrings, they use the same method to hold on without tearing the stockings.

While these are the basis of what your lingerie will consist of, there are a lot of variations and options that are now available and with a little bit of research- which we’re going to be helping you with- you’ll hopefully have everything that you need before you say I Do! Before we get down to the specifics, let’s cover the basics first: 

When to Buy: 

• You should start shopping for your lingerie after your first dress/outfit fitting, once you have figured out the size and style, so that you can better understand what your lingerie requirements are.
• Ideally buy your lingerie before your final dress fitting to ensure that it offers the support and fit that you want.
• If your dress is very fitted check that there is room for a bra underneath, especially if your bra is lightly padded. Some dresses, especially strapless ones, come with an in built bra. If it’s an indian wedding, your choli will most likely have a light padding to take the place of a bra.  
• If your dress needs taking in, wear your underwear during the fitting to ensure that any amendments allow room for your bra.
• A wedding is one of the biggest occasions in someone’s life, and we all want to look our best; bear in mind that last-minute weight changes can significantly affect how lingerie fits. We suggest buying lingerie from a company with a flexible returns policy so if you require a different size nearer the big day, you can exchange it. Chances are that your lingerie will be expensive, so you don’t want the money to go to waste! 

What style? 

The type of bra that you choose will determine how comfortable you are on your big day, therefore it is essential to make sure that you understand what your options are. After all, nobody wants a pokey underwire to get in the way of having a good time! On most days, bras are a necessity, but what’s the function of the bra on the wedding day? Usually, bras are worn to dress shopping and fittings, and it is suggested that after the final fitting, the bra be built into your outfit of choice. However, for some dresses -and some budgets- this may not be the case. You should then consider a bra, bustier or corselette as a good bridal option, depending on the style of your outfit. 

• Outfit with straps: If you’re keeping yourself relatively covered, and your shoulders are mostly covered, then we recommend sticking with what you know best: your basic bra. However, just because it’s basic doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be fabulous! It should have minimal wiring and boneing; that is both for comfort reasons and because you want the least lining showing through your dress. Your overall look will definitely be spoilt if you have unnecessary seams showing through your outfit. 

• Backless: Figuring out how to make the backless dress work for you can be an exhausting ordeal. As gorgeous as the look is, it comes with a price; gravity works against you. Luckily it’s 2017, and with the amount of engineering that goes into the manufacturing of bras, there are ones out there that can help support, and cover up, with minimal lining. That being said, due to the weight and volume of fuller busts we generally recommended wearing a double-strap bra or a multi-way bra. If this is not suitable for your dress however, you may find sufficient support from either a corseted dress or sturdy basque. If you want to try a multiway bra however, we recommend testing the comfort of the bra for a day in advance of the wedding, to check how comfortable and supportive it is, as it might take some getting used to, especially if you haven’t worn one before. 

• Strapless: Strapless wedding dresses are still the most popular choice among brides across the world. A lot of Indian brides have been opting for strapless blouses as well, as it gives the outfit a slightly modern look. If this is your style of choice, then we would suggest a smooth, completely unadorned strapless bra in a light shade of nude. Seamless styles with a light lining of silicone strips on the inside help to keep the bra in place and invisible under the dress. This is one style where a bustier or corset may also be an option; it will structure, cinch, and boost your bust to perfection, giving you a great shape, while also ensuring that you have the right amount of support. They also add a touch of retro romance with their elongated shape, structure, and boneing.   

Underwear: 

The last thing you want peeking out from underneath your dress is some cheeky lines! Most importantly, you don’t want any embarrassing panty lines. While they really are the most comfortable, if there’s ever a reason to kick the cotton knickers and the granny panties, and go for something a little more bare-bottom, this is it! However, remember that feeling good is the most essential part of this experience; choose wisely: a panty that fits well, makes you feel sexy, and keeps those lines to a literal bare-minimum is going to be your best friend on your wedding day. Thongs are ideal for most dresses, especially if they are narrow or fitted, or if the fabric of your dress is even slightly clingy -like a silk, or a thin cotton. However, if thongs are not a regular part of your wardrobe, and wearing one makes you uncomfortable then a nude, seamless panty, with a slightly high waist and coverage on the hips can be both comfortable and slimming.  

Garters: 

We all know the tradition of wearing a garter underneath your wedding dress and the tradition of your groom throwing it to his unmarried male guests. It’s a particularly exciting part of the ceremony, so it makes sense that this piece of lingerie is extra special. Hopefully, it will be the only piece that all your guests will see, after all, it’s not a free peep show! Try not to go for something too sexy, you really should save that for your wedding night. Instead, keep this garment in line with the theme of the rest of your wedding dress: simple and elegant.  

Shapewear: 

Shapewear is often a popular choice for bridal lingerie as it helps to create a beautiful and streamlined silhouette underneath your dress, and works for a variety of dress styles. If you have a fitted dress then wearing a basque or slipdress will help to smooth over any unwanted lumps or bumps and create the illusion of an hourglass figure. If you are larger busted then a basque will also help to lift your bust and create a more secure fit, making sure that your girls stay in place. However, if you are considering shapewear, make sure to buy one that ends at an optimal place, so as to not peep out from under your outfit, depending on the style of the same. Control pants are a great option as well, especially if you are conscious about your tummy area. They are specifically designed to suck you in at all the right places and create a smoother silhouette underneath your dress. There are a lot of myths about how uncomfortable control pants can be to wear, but as long as you get the right size and style they will feel absolutely fine.  

Things to Remember: 

• Don’t be skimpy: This piece of advice applies to the lingerie and the price tag! And while it might be tempting to go all in an buy something that is racy, for the sake of being sexy, keep in mind that you don’t have to resort to what the media tells you. Less isn’t always more in this case. We would suggest going for something that is sophisticated- fishnet stockings and jersey material are out of the question. This is one of the few times where you can justify spending big money on a lingerie set, so make sure to spend wisely! 
• Make it special: Comfort is key and no matter the situation, we are always going to suggest going for the option that ensures that. That being said, a floor length nightgown, no matter how great it is, is not going to give you the reaction that you’re looking for. So depending on what your preferences are- and being a seductress isn’t everyone’s cup of tea- look for the sexy version of the same! Something satiny, silky or lacy (or all of the above!) is what we would definitely recommend.
• Be bold and adventurous: This is your night to shine! Leave your inhibitions at the door and make sure to play out all the fantasies that you have had; this is your (and his) night girl. And nobody puts on a corset on their wedding night to sleep in, trust me, you’ll wake up blue in the face if you try. This lingerie is meant to be unique, for one night only, not practical, so don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone and opt for something a little spicy like that teddy in the store window or the lingerie set you would not wear otherwise. 
• Beyond white: Yes, white is generally the colour of choice when it comes to deciding lingerie, but what most people are not aware of is that a cream or a nude would be a better option, as white tends to stand out against the fabric. There is definitely a certain appeal to white lingerie, but there is a whole universe of bridal lingerie that comes in other colours; ivory, blacks and reds are a great option for the wedding night. And besides, who says you need only one? If you want to wear a white set during the ceremony and change into something a little different later, there’s nothing stopping you from doing so!  
• Designer: Yes, it’s probably going to be more expensive than the collection that you find in your local lingerie store, but the price tag is worth it. Not only do you need to be comfortable, you need to make sure you feel your sexiest possible. And that is most likely to happen if you spend a couple of extra bucks ensuring that the fit and material is just the way you need it to be.  

 One last thing! As Murphy’s Law states: If anything needs to go wrong, it will. So make sure to carry a backup (or two) just in case something happens to your preferred set. It’s a good idea to have a couple of pairs of stockings on hand, if you’re using them, because they have a tendency to tear at the most inopportune of times. The same applies to underwear as well; keep another pair on hand just in case. And finally, the lingerie shopping does not end here; you also have your honeymoon to think of! And that is the time to splurge on all the sexy outfits that you’ve come across online or seen in store windows, and wondered if you would ever have a use for them. Well, now you do! It doesn’t have to be a splurge, just something over-the-top and unexpected, and maybe not 100% practical. It doesn’t have to be expensive either! And remember, don’t go straight for the three-piece garter set; start slow and figure out your tastes and level of comfort. Then go all in! 
4. Be comfy: This is the most important thing as far as I’m concerned; how does one feel sexy and good if you’ve got the wrong set on? Comfort means different things to different people, so whether it’s choosing materials that feel good, styles that make you look amazing or something that makes you feel cute and flirty, don’t let a pushy salesperson, a partner or a shopping buddy push you into anything you don’t want to do; lingerie is a private and individual thing – and something that only you will be experiencing most of the time- so make sure it’s something that makes you feel awesome.
5. Don’t scrimp: Go for high quality fabrics. Trust me, you’ll thank us later when the material isn’t scratching the underside of your boobs after a couple of washes. After making sure you’ve got the right fit and design, take some time to figure out what kind of material you would like; there are a lot more options than lace out there, trust me, so don’t limit yourself! You should take a look at the silk options, as well as the ones that are made out of tighter fabric, if you’re having a catwoman moment.
